What Is Gambling?
Gambling is when you bet money (or something of value) on an outcome that’s mostly based on chance. This includes things like sports betting, lottery tickets, casinos, slot machines, and even online games with “loot boxes.”
At first, gambling might seem exciting or harmless. Some teens might even see it on social media or hear about someone “winning big.” But the truth is, gambling can quickly spiral into a serious addiction: one that harms your finances, your mental health, your relationships, and your future.
Gambling always favors the house. Even if you win occasionally, the odds are stacked against you. Many people lose thousands of dollars, going into debt, chasing the illusion of a win. In addition, gambling is linked to anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. The stress of losing money or hiding gambling behavior can severely impact your well-being. Gambling can be just as addictive as drugs or alcohol. Once your brain starts craving the rush of gambling, it becomes harder to stop. People often continue gambling even when it causes serious harm. In Illinois, it’s illegal for minors to gamble. Getting caught can lead to legal trouble, school suspensions, or problems on your permanent record.
Some early warning signs of gambling problems include feeling the urge to bet “just one more time”, lying to family or friends about gambling, spending more money than you can afford to lose, skipping school or work to gamble, and feeling anxious or angry when you can’t gamble.
