What Is a Fake ID?

A fake ID is any type of identification, like a driver's license, that is doctored, forged, or manufactured to misrepresent someone’s age or identity. Young people tend to consider using them to access clubs, purchase alcohol, or simply for the appearance of being older. But what may seem like a fleeting, fun decision has dire consequences. 

Why You Shouldn't Use a Fake ID

First of all, it's illegal. It's illegal to possess or use a fake ID. In Illinois, even possessing a fake ID is a Class 4 felony. Criminal penalties include fines, community service, probation and/or jail time. A criminal record follows you through life and can negatively impact college admission opportunities, jobs and potential scholarship offerings. Second, because of the consequences. Even if you think you'll never get caught, using a fake ID is dangerous. Even if your name appears on a police blotter, it could take years for it to be expunged, if it ever is. This raises concern for career paths down the line, especially in the judicial system, for law enforcement and government positions that require thorough background checks. Third, because where there's smoke, there's usually fire. If you're underage with a fake ID in an adult setting, likely, you're in the midst of an environment to which you're neither legally nor emotionally suited. If you purchase alcohol and/or enter a club with questionable intentions there is guaranteed to be alcohol involved, bad decisions and risk factors not only for yourself but the others around you. Finally, it's easier to get caught than you realize. Most businesses have scanning technology that automatically identifies fake IDs before anyone is allowed to gain entry or enter a business or buy something. Bouncers, bartenders and cashiers are often trained to notice warning signs associated with scams and scams against the law. Even without an explanation an encounter with the police could occur at the drop of a hat if someone believes you're operating illegality.

Getting a fake ID might seem like one step closer to freedom but so many reasons exist to not pursue one. The law is clear and will put you in bad situations with lasting effects before you know it, even when you're not a teenager anymore. Do yourself a favor and protect your future by doing the right thing today.
