Being pulled over by the police can be extremely frightening, especially for teenagers, regardless of how long you've been driving or how recently you received your license. However, understanding your rights, how to react, and what not to do can significantly impact your safety and result.
This guide breaks down the key do’s and don’ts of being pulled over, specifically for teen drivers.
What to Do if You’re Pulled Over
First, pull over safely. Signal and move to the right side of the road as soon as you can safely do so after you notice flashing lights behind you. If it is safe to do so, try to stop in a well-lit area or close to other people if you are on a highway or a dark street. Then, turn off your engine, roll down your window, and place your hands on the steering wheel so the officer can see them. Don’t reach for your license or registration without an officer telling you to. Even harmless, premature movements can be misunderstood. Always speak calmly and respectfully, even if you feel the stop is unfair. Saying things like “Yes, Officer” shows you are cooperating.
Know Your Rights
Remember, you have the right to remain silent. You can ask, “Am I free to go?” If the officer says yes, you can leave. You can always refuse a search unless the officer has a warrant or probable cause. You also have the right to record, as long as it doesn’t interfere and your phone stays visible.
What Not to Do if You’re Pulled Over
Don’t argue or be rude to the officer, even if you feel the officer is being rude to you. You can always challenge the stop later in court. Don’t lie or give the officer false information. Giving a false name, license, or making up details is illegal and could lead to criminal charges. Never suddenly reach for anything. Always let the officer know what you are doing before you reach for anything, like your phone. Finally, never attempt to just drive away. This turns a minor traffic stop into a major criminal charge.
