A lot of teens want to get a job and start earning money. But before you do that, make sure that you know your rights.
What Jobs Can You Legally Work?
That depends on how old you are. If you’re under 14 years old, you are usually restricted to stuff like babysitting, delivering newspapers, or working for your family's business. Ages 14-15 can usually work any non-dangerous job, such as retail, but will typically need a work permit from your school. People aged 16-17 get more freedom but still can’t do anything that might be considered dangerous by the Department of Labor.
What Hours Can I Work?
That also depends on age. 14–15 years old can work a max of 3 hours per day on school days and 18 hours/week total during the school year. During breaks or summer, they can work up to 8 hours/day for a max of 40 hours/week. 14–15 year olds are not allowed to work before 7 AM or after 7 PM (9 PM in summer). For 16–17 year olds: The hour limits mostly go away, but night work restrictions may still apply depending on your state.
Do You Need a Work Permit?
Yes, if you're under 16. You can get one through your school. Employers should ask for it before officially hiring you. Make sure it’s signed by a school official, your guardian, and your future employer.
