(1) SCRATCH GAME

Butterfly Game

Conditions

When the Spacebar is pressed, the butterfly continuously moves towards the mouse.
When the butterfly is clicked on top of any of the 2 flowers, the flower will disappear, and the player scores 25 points (Red Flower) or 100 points (Yellow Flower).
If the Score = 125 points, the player wins the game.
If the butterfly touches the blue borders, the game is over.

Thinking Questions

How do you make the butterfly point and move towards the mouse pointer?
How do you cause the flower to disappear when the butterfly is clicked while being on top of it?
How do you make sure that the points do not continue to increase because the butterfly touches the flower for too long?

(2) MS-EXCEL

Spreadsheet with LookUp

The MS-Excel spreadsheet requires you complete a spreadsheet made up of 2 tables.

The top table "looks up" the values from the bottom table.

There are 2 LOOKUP functions, we need to know

VLOOKUP : Looks up tables arranged by columns

HLOOKUP : Looks up tables by rows

Since, the bottom table is arranged in columns, we will use the VLOOKUP function.

VLOOKUP (Cell_Address, Lookup_Range, Column_Number, FALSE)

Cell_Address : The cell in the top table which has a common value with the bottom table.
Lookup_Range : The entire range in the bottom table (Highlight the entire table)
Column_Number : The column number in the bottom table.
FALSE :

example (not from the question)

=VLOOKUP(B2, B20:B25, 3, FALSE)

B2 > an address in the top table (which has a common value with the bottom table)
B20: B25 > a range of value from the bottom table
3 > column number 3 in bottom table
FALSE > FALSE is reserved for approximate match which is the best in many cases.

(a) length check;

(b) range check; and

Messages may be displayed to give instructions or feedback to the users.

An error message can be displayed if an invalid data is entered.

What is Data Validation? pg 133

Data validation is a process used to control the type of data that is entered in the spreadsheet.
Data needs to be validated (checked) before being processed so that data entered is according to requirements.
By configuring (setting) data validation field, you can prevent users from entering data that is not valid (prevent wrong data entry).

How?

In the spreadsheet software (MS-Excel), data validation can be configured by

(a) providing a list of choices (drop-down list); or

(b) defining the types of input data (setting criteria).

1. Length Check

Length check determines the length of the data and make sure that it is not too short or too long.

example: You require a password of 5 characters only

A range check determines whether the data entered falls within a specified range.

example: the user needs to enter a text between 5 and 8 characters.

A type check determines the type of data that can be entered, like date, whole number or decimal number in the cell.

example: user is required to enter to enter a date for birthday.
