Von-Neumann, an early computer scientist, described computers are machines with Input-Process-Output devices.

Others
- Magnetic Ink Character Reader(MICR) used in banks to scan cheques quickly.
- Barcode reader used in supermarkets and department stores to scan barcodes.
- Optical Character Reader (OCR) used to scan documents and convert them into readable text for computers.
