Moona Luna and
Fun with Foods
The theme for this week is: Fun with Favorite Foods!
I will watch the band, Moona Luna, perform many songs.
One of their songs, “Todas las Comidas” (“All the Foods”), is about trying all different kinds of food so you know what you like to eat.
Today I will make art with ingredients and tools found in my kitchen!
Step 1:
I will watch this video
I will watch this video
If I want to get right to the song “Todas las Comidas”, I can skip to 3:54 in the video.
What type of music is this?
Moona Luna is a four-member band that performs in both English and Spanish.
Moona Luna mixes Mexican Folk music with Cumbia to create a multicultural musical experience.
Cumbia is a style of music and dance from Columbia.
As I watch, I will meet:
Sandra Velasquez
Sings lead vocals, plays guitar
Sean Dixon
Plays the bass
Eileen Willis
Plays accordion, sings backup vocals
Sebastian Guerrero
Plays the cajon
Cajon is a box-shaped percussion instrument
Step 2:
What did I notice?
What did I notice?
1. What did I notice about the musicians in Moona Luna?
- How did they interact with their instruments?
- What did I notice about their facial expressions?
2. What did I notice about myself?
- How did I feel when the band played fast?
- How did I feel when the band played slow?
3. What are Sandra's favorite foods?
Avocado! Lentils!
Avocado! Lentils!
- Do I like avocados?
- Do I like lentils?
- What are my favorite foods?
Step 3: Art Making
In the song Todas las Comidas (All the Foods), Sandra Velasquez talks about some of her favorite foods. Avocado!
She also talks about one of Sean Dixon’s favorite drinks. Coffee!
Today, I will make art with ingredients and tools found in my kitchen.
Materials I will need:
- Tools found in my kitchen
These are some tools I could use: pastry brush, scrub brush, whisk, cup, spoon, cookie cutters, chopsticks, spatula
- White paper
- Coffee or tea -- the stronger and darker the better!
(mix 1 part coffee, 1 part water)
- Spices and Sauces -- I can use my favorite spices or sauces to add color and texture to my artwork.
I can use some of my favorites like: Nutmeg, Tandoori, Paprika, Cinnamon, Turmeric, Chili Powder, Ginger, Mustard, Cloves, Coriander, Vanilla Extract
Activity - Part 1
First
I will mix the coffee or tea with warm water. I can also ask an adult to brew me a cup of coffee or a cup of tea.
The stronger and darker, the better!
Next
I will gather tools from my kitchen. I can ask an adult for help if I need it.
Then
I will dip my tools in the coffee or tea and make patterns on my blank piece of paper.
I can try different tools and make different marks.
Activity - Part 2
First
I will mix my spices and sauces with water. The less water I use, the richer the color of my spices will be.
Next
I will dip my tools in the spices and make patterns on my piece of paper.
Last
I can watch this video as an example of how I can create my artwork.
Step 4: Make New Patterns!
I can make a new piece of artwork using different spices and kitchen tools as I listen to the artists of Moona Luna play Todas las Comidas.
What new patterns can I create?
How do the colors look different depending on how much water I use?
Can I create these patterns slowly or quickly depending on the music?

Extension Questions:
When I am making my artwork out of spices and coffee, my sense of smell may be activated.
Do any of the spices or coffee smell good?
Do any of the spices or coffee smell bad?
Do any of the spices or coffee remind me of something? A memory?
What is one of my favorite smells?
What is one of my favorite tastes?
