For our brainstorm, research, and experiment challenge, we had to create a scenario with potential problems and multiple solutions for each. One major problem I often face is dropping things between my car seat and the center console. While driving, I can’t reach down to grab items there, so I have to exit the car and access them from the back seat, which is inconvenient. Another problem is how difficult that gap is to clean properly. Unless you have a special vacuum attachment or something like detailing slime, it’s nearly impossible to get it completely clean.
Dropping something down there can also distract you while driving, which is dangerous and could cause serious harm to you and your passengers. To solve this, I thought about using a gripper tool or just waiting until I stopped driving to retrieve the item. Ultimately, I chose a seat gap filler because it’s the most practical option it blocks the gap so things don’t fall in, and its shallow design makes it easy to grab anything that might slip out of your pocket. This way, you can simply reach down and retrieve your items without hassle.
For this prototype, I simply folded a piece of paper and cut a section to accommodate the seatbelt, so it wouldn’t interfere with its movement. If I were to 3D print this or turn it into an actual product, I would design it to snugly wrap around the seatbelt holder for a secure fit. I’d also make the piece slightly larger than the gap, allowing the seat to press it firmly between the seat and center console to prevent shifting. Alternatively, I might use store-bought Velcro strips to attach it directly to the seat for added stability.
