Education in US vs SE
So now that I have been in classrooms in both countries lets compare..
Differences
There is no Ms. Kersey here! Most teachers in Sweden go by their first names, while in the US it is the opposite.
Teachers have a less lesson packed schedule, often having 3-4 copmpared to 6-7 like the US.
Keeping the doors open! Sweden has almost open doors to the public, not requiring checking in or monitoring.
There are no State standards, instead they have 4-5 course requirements that students should fulfill and be graded on.
Students are required to learn Swedish and English, with another optional langauge such as Spanish, French, or Dutch.
Special subject teachers, such as art, were assigned a class and stayed with them from 7th-9th grade.
Intermixed students, many schools like mine had high school students who would come to take classes in the same building as the younger students.
Grades! Sweden calls High School Gymnasium.
Similarities
Teachers are always centered around the well being of their students, making sure to give additional help when needed.
School schedules are very similar, starting early around 8am and normally ending at 3pm.
Attendance is monitored and resported every class, with messages sent if student is absent.
Test, both have required dates for testing and are strict about testing rooms and time.
In both, most schools, they provide chromebooks for students.
Students have a "homeroom".
Similar lunch rooms, classrooms, and common areas.
Of course both countries hold education to a high standard, as it is the foundation for future generations, they cater to these students giving them the biggest chance of success.
Now how about a cultural treasure...
