About AFRL NM
AFRL NM STEM Outreach reaches over 10,000 students and 150 teachers annually through our collective outreach efforts. These efforts include 5 annual “Missions” aligned with content standards and a variety of STEM community events.
Our ultimate goal is to increase the number of qualified candidates for STEM related careers with an emphasis on increasing the diversity of applicants ready to enter the STEM workforce.
About Me
I've been at AFRL NM for 2 years. I'm the coordinator and teacher of the Robotics Challenge and I also teach the TECH Mission classes.
I graduated from UNM with a BA in Economics an AA in Computer Science and an MA in Education. The education degree was a non-teaching degree, so I've returned to school to complete my coursework and requirements to obtain a license to teach technology. I started my career as a computer programmer. I taught computer science at CNM and The College of Santa Fe, I developed multimedia training programs as a training specialist and as a data analyst, I developed geographic information systems.
I enjoy art, traveling, hiking, cycling, gym workouts, and salsa dancing.
I grew up in a military family so my family moved probably more than most families. I was born in Spain. My mother is from New Mexico and my father is from Georgia. I've always called myself a New Mexican and will continue to identify as one even if I leave the state. As a child I overcame severe stuttering, and challenges with reading and writing. Adapting to new places and people was also a challenge for me. I think in large part to the these and other life experiences, that I will always make a strong attempt to make my classes comfortable and accessible to all.
I love teaching and I've wanted to teach this class for many years. I hope your child enjoys this class and is able to use the skills he/she will develop in the future.
I believe that all children should be provided with a safe, inviting and stimulating learning environment that supports their growth as individuals and productive, responsible members of society.
Making
I believe the best way to learn computer technology and programming is through making things. In my classes, students will use a variety of tools to create digital documents each day that will go into class portfolios.
Sharing
I like the idea that learning is a social activity. So, I encourage students to help each other and work in teams.
Participating
Attendance is the most important ingredient to success. Most of the work in my classes can be completed in class if students regularly show up on time, seldom miss class and participate in class activities.
Moving on
I try to expose children to tools, skills and work habits that will help them in the future. Teachers are outstanding references for college, future jobs and other opportunities. Hard work, an open mind and a positive attitude will open many doors for your future. Students should take school seriously.
