March 3rd, 2023

Hours and Grades Due

• Hours due APRIL 7TH for everyone no excuses

• When they become available we will have everyone submit their quarter 3 grades

• This is to ensure seniors are still eligible for their cords and sophomores and juniors don’t have to reapply next year

• Officer application

  • For those of you interested in becoming a Science NHS officer, application is on the website under the forms sections and due on APRIL 5TH

  • There will be an interview along with the application

  • Positions you can apply for are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, Public Relations

  • If you have any questions about the duties of each officer position, all the responsibilities of each officer position are listed on the website under the officers section

• Volunteer opportunities

  • Ronald McDonald House Share a Meal - for those of you volunteering tomorrow, make sure to get the items assigned to you on the doc Khadeejah sent out on Monday

  • Science Tutoring in Mrs. Tomlin’s room Tuesdays after school

  • Recycling on Tuesdays after school. The last day for recycling will be April 4th

  • History Night on March 23 from 6-8

    • 5 volunteers needed

    • Can get up to 2.5 hours

    • We are thinking of having people dress up as significant scientists but more information will be sent out later 

  • Homeless Drive: Donate the following items in a gallon ziploc bag or any reusable bag for one hour

    • • Toothbrush, toothpaste (full tube), deodorant, comb, socks, wet wipes/ baby wipes, hand sanitizer, lotion, shampoo, baby powder

      • The max hours you can get is 2, so 2 bags

      • They are due no later than March 30 in Mrs. Tomlin’s room (577)

• Last meeting on April 14 where we will have our end of the year pizza party, announce new officers, and distribute cords to seniors

• Reminder of membership requirements:

  • Maintain an unweighted 3.0 GPA in all science courses and overall

  • If your semester grade falls below a B you will be placed on probation

  • Be currently enrolled in an advanced science course

  • Volunteer 8 hours per semester

  • Hours for seniors will probably be due mid-April to ensure that cords arrive on time 

• Volunteer opportunities

  • Ronald McDonald House share-a-meal on March 4 and March 24 

    • Only 5 people per shift

    • You will be preparing meals at the Ronald McDonald house near Nemours

    • We will assign you ingredients to bring for each meal after everyone is signed up

  • MLK commission food drive

    • There is a competition among the district, whichever school donates the most food in weight wins. You can donate 10 cans for 1 hour and the maximum hours you can receive from this is 1 hour

  • Science Tutoring after school Tuesdays in Mrs. Tomlin’s room

  • Orlando Science Center Spark Stem Fest (Feb 17-20)

    •  Sign up link has been posted on the website

  • Campus cleanup from 9-12 (Feb 4)

  • LNMS STEAM Night from 6-8 (Feb 9)

    • If you can no longer make it, message Safi before Sunday without any penalty hour

  • Recycling like always Tuesdays after school

• Reminder of membership requirements:

  • Maintain an unweighted 3.0 GPA in all science courses and overall

• Hours have been inputted and penalties have been calculated

  • The penalty is 1.5 multiplied the number of hours missed

• If you forgot to submit you already have 1 penalty hour and we are giving you a week to submit your semester 1 hours if you have any

• You will have to submit your semester 1 grades soon, the report cards aren’t available on skyward yet, but once they are we will let you know and send out the google form to submit to

• Volunteer opportunities

  • Tutoring in Tomlin’s room after school on Tuesdays

  • Recycling on Tuesdays - New process! 

    • Pick up a recycling volunteer tag from Mrs. Tomlin’s room before your recycling and return it to her when you are finished

    • Turn in photos to the same form, but now take a photo of the recycling INSIDE the bin and a photo at the large bin

    • Sign up sheet will be on the website shortly

  • Feb 17-20 Orlando Science Center Spark Stem Fest, sign up link is on the website

Field Trip

• Still waiting on approval 

• It will be on February 17 and we will leave school at 8:00 

• It will be $30 per person, not including lunch

• Turn in permission slips by Friday, January 20th 

Induction

• • Jan 11th (NEXT WED) right after school in the auditorium is the Induction ceremony rehearsal that’s mandatory for EVERYONE

  • Jan 13th (NEXT FRIDAY) is the actual induction ceremony from 6:00 to 7:00, members must arrive by 5:30

  • Remember that you get 1 in club hour for attending both

Club Photos

• Club photos will be taken on January 24th. We have not yet received the schedule for what time slot we have to be in the gym, but once we do it will be sent on Remind

  • Make sure to wear your Science NHS shirt for the photo

  • If you have not yet picked up your shirt, you can go to Mrs. Tomlin’s room during lunch

  • Recycling hours/ photos are to be submitted through the recycling photo submission form ONLY and not on your logs

  • Hours will carry over to next semester 

Induction Ceremony!! - Jan 13 from 6:00 to 7:00

• Everyone is required to attend both the rehearsal and the induction 

• Induction rehearsal is on Jan 11 after school from 1:15 to 2:15

• Rehearsal should be quite short- around 30 mins

• Old members will receive 1 club hour for attending/ participating in induction 

• RSVP with the form ASAP, by Monday the 5th at the latest

Brevard Zoo Field Trip!

• Field trip will be in late January or mid-February 

• • It will be at the Brevard Zoo and cost around $40

  • We would leave the school at around 8:00 am

  • The date will be confirmed by the January meeting

• If you were not able to pick up your shirt at the meeting, please go to Ms. Tomlin's room(577) during B-lunch

November 4th, 2022

• STEAM Night is next Wednesday (11/9)!

  • If you are volunteering with another club check in with an officer to get credit for attending/volunteering, but you will NOT be able to get SciNHS hours

  • If you have a game or performance you should have already reached out to Mrs.Tomlin or me with a note from a coach or teacher

  • Once you arrive, sign in with an officer and sign out with an officer before you leave

  • Table assignments per volunteer will be sent out this weekend or by Monday

  • Wear a Lake Nona or navy shirt with pants or shorts and closed-toe shoes

• STEAM Night responsibilities per shift:

  • Shift 1 will be setting up the tables

  • Whatever table you are assigned to, you will be the “stamper.” You will be responsible for stamping passports when they complete your station

  • 2 people per shift will be at the door welcoming people in and handing out passports

  • Shift 2 will be assisting with taking down everything and cleaning up the cafeteria at the end

• Other volunteer hour opportunities:

  • Recycling is still happening every Tuesday: 30 mins per hallway, take a photo and submit it with your log and make sure to put the recycling in the main bin WITHOUT the plastic bag. The signup has been on the website

  • Tutoring in Mrs. Tomlin’s room Tuesdays after school

  • Restore Our Shores: Upcoming volunteering event on Saturday, November 19th from 9am to 1pm. 

    • Volunteers must be ages 15 and over! This is an outdoor volunteering event. The location is near the Brevard Zoo which is about 40 minutes away. 

    • Google Form will be sent out on the Remind. This is already published on the website under the Community Service Tab as well

**Our volunteer log has been updated! Remember to track your hours with the volunteer log that’s on the website under the “forms” section. Turn all your hours in at the end of the semester through the google form by adding all your volunteer logs in one file.

• Induction ceremony dates have been confirmed!

  • Rehearsal is on January 11 (Wednesday) from 1:15 to 2:15

  • Induction is on January 13 (Friday) from 5:30 to 7:00

  • Both rehearsal and actual induction is MANDATORY FOR EVERYONE

  • Wear dressy casual to the induction ceremony (no jeans or sneakers)

• Community Service Opportunities

  • LNHS STEAM NIGHT! - November 9th 

    • Mandatory for all members to attend (or volunteer)

    • Around 4:30 to 8:00 commitment if you are volunteering - Great way to earn most of your hours!

    • If you are part of clubs that are STEAM related and would like to participate please reach out!

  • LNMS STEAM NIGHT - November 10 from 5:30 to 7:30

  • Science Tutoring in Mrs. Tomlin’s room Tuesdays after school

  • Homecoming Parade

  • Recycling program 

    • On Tuesdays after school, members will take them from end of hallways to behind cafeteria into the bins without the trash bags 

    • Submit a picture with your volunteer log as proof for hours

    • Sign up genius will be posted on the website soon

• Deadline for semester 1 hours is Dec 16

  • Volunteer hours will be submitted online

March 7, 2019 Meeting

Community Service

• 8 hours per semester (4 science-related, 4 other)

• SENIORS: hours are due at the end of the third quarter! This means you should have turned in all hours before the day spring break starts which is March 14th!!

  • *Probation:* 

  • Due to no or unfinished submission of volunteer hours for the first semester, you will have 30 days to turn them in (This will be March 11th). This is in addition to your 10 (you are being penalized with an extra 2 hours that are due by the end of the second semester, 3rd quarter for seniors).

  • If you failed to turn your report card in for the first semester you have until March 14th to turn in a copy. Progress book report cards will not be accepted, please go to student services to get a copy.

  • If you fail to do so you will be dismissed from the Science National Honor Society.

Officer Applications for Next School Year

• Applications can be picked up in room 577 and are due April 12th!

• Here are everyone’s duties: 

  • Sci NHS Pres prepares meeting agenda and runs meetings, in charge of induction and field trip coordination as well as promoting the club.

  • Vice pres will assist Pres with club events and attend ICC meetings. Arrange collaboration with other clubs for community service and/or collaborative events and will review the attendance of members. 

  • Comm svc officer in charge of outreach for elementary and middle school tutoring and stem nights. Must make sure to confirm dates with persons in charge and find as many comm svc opportunities as possible. Will organize local school comm svc events and projects such as garden project and mural. Inputs and maintains comm svc hours. 

  • Secretary takes minutes at all meetings and posts them to the website also reviews and inputs report cards/GPA. 

  • Treasurer works on Club dues, field trip dues, t-shirt and cord distribution may need to pick up supplies and shirt orders.

  • Historian is in charge of social media and updating the website with photos and event information and updates/creates slideshows for induction ceremony or other presentations and update and maintain SciNHS facebook page. 

Class Party

• Our end of year pizza party and next year's officer announcement will be MAY 3rd!

Operation Gratitude

• 15 min per full, handwritten card, up to 2 hours credit.

• Turn into Mrs. Tomlin or the SciNHS bin in room 577.

• Should be open, do not put in a sealed envelope

• collecting for third quarter only

• Please attach a sticky note with your letters saying your full names so you can get credit for your hours.

• Start with a salutation, such as “Dear Hero” or “Dear Brave One”  - Express your thanks for their selfless service

• Please do not include the date or year on your letter or card

• Avoid politics completely and religion in excess

• Share a little about yourself: Family, Hobbies, Work, School, Pets, Travel

• Talk about life and interests: Sports, Weather, Music, Movies, Food, Books

• First Names only, must be one full page of a handwritten note to receive full credit
