In 2015, as part of the George Town Festival, the Little Art House ran a series of silent movies with live local musicians accompanying them. The result was spectacular and so when the Little Art House 2.0 opened, planning for the new Silent Movie//Live Music festival happened straight away. We at LAH like to believe in experiencing things in the way in which they were designed to be experienced, which is why silent films must have live music. The second time round we also showed international silent movies, including films from China and India. More musicians were brought in and all were given 100% total control over the music they played... this would challenge some musicians, but not ours!
The highlights of the two events were Verena Koay's solo violin performance of Charlie Chaplin's 1936 film "Modern Times" in 2015, Boba Lee's solo percussion performance for the Fritz Lang's 1927 film "Metropolis" in 2018. Both were absolutely stunning and demonstrate just how capable and disciplined these young musicians can be.

The only musician to have performed at both the first and second silent movie festivals, is oboist Lee Chun Howe. Performing solo alongside short films so that he can catch his breath, Lee Chun Howe's music is enchanting and takes us to another world of magic to experience the film.
Aged only 15, Verena not only performed beautifully for the whole 1hr39min, but as always she did it with a wink and a smile. As she was in charge of all her musical decisions, she really showed the audience what she was capable of and we loved every moment.
