What is home to you? Home can be your family, friends, loved ones, a place, certain town/road/area, food and even a feeling. I believe that home is something that gives you that warm feeling and is meaningful to you. To me, home is my family and what I share with my family. It is part of my identity, cultures, emotions and my immediate family.
My subject matter is about my identity and culture which is Turkey. This is where I was brought up and most attached to. where i was born is Bursa and Karahmanmash. I had an idea of doing the fashion of the culture wich relates to different occasions and religions. Different layouts and how they work. This project is about showing my home back in Turkey and what home means to me. What makes a home isn’t just the aesthetics, but the energy and happiness in the room. The building in Turkey didn’t have much inside, mostly blank walls but we still had a life there. Being brought up there is different to how it is in London, with different lifestyles and fashion being the main things that stood out for me, hence why I chose to do fashion for this project.
I went by doing a dress which is not just an ordinary dress it is a kaftan, famous clothing in Turkey. My whole concept was to combine to city’s karamanmarsh where my dad was from and Bursa where my mum was from to put together this kaftan.
I created a kaftan out of linen then embroidery stitch it by hand with the design that I made digitally. A kaftan is what you wear on the beach underneath swim suit.
