My Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) philosophy is rooted on the belief that educational equity is the fundamental, non-negotiable moral mandate of our profession. This commitment dictates that every design choice must prioritize eliminating barriers to learning, moving beyond mere compliance to ensure genuine inclusion. Our primary role is to act as advocates, creating transformative learning experiences that are not just accessible but intentionally designed for all students, particularly those who have been historically marginalized. This commitment is realized through a disciplined, intentional approach centered resolutely on diverse learner needs.
Effective design starts at the finish line. I employ Backwards Design as the foundational strategy, rigorously aligning learning objectives, assessments, and activities to ensure every course component serves a clear, demonstrable purpose. This methodological rigor necessitates the deep integration of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles by providing multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression from the outset, building flexibility into the learning environment. For me, digital accessibility (adhering to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)) is not a check box; it is the practical enforcement of UDL, guaranteeing that the learning experience is genuinely available to everyone. Intentional design is inherently inclusive design.
Technology is a powerful amplifier, but it must always serve pedagogy, never drive it. My approach demands that all tools and platforms are selected and integrated strategically, based on their ability to directly facilitate a clearly defined learning objective or enhance student access. We move beyond using technology for the sake of novelty. If a technological solution does not improve engagement, simplify content complexity, or expand accessibility for the learner, it is excluded. This disciplined methodology ensures that technology is a functional, meaningful component of the learning ecosystem, leading to robust and purposeful course delivery.
I view the instructional designer as an empathic partner. We collaborate closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to translate their knowledge into accessible, high-impact experiences. Our partnership extends beyond the course level to championing systemic change, ensuring that policies, processes, and all digital assets reflect a commitment to genuine inclusion. Our ultimate measure of success is the creation of learning environments that are not only effective but fundamentally fair for every individual learner.
