Pattern: All students are to obtain the free pattern provided by Anne Ibach. You should bring either a printed copy (I downloaded 4 pages per sheet) or you may opt to make sufficient notes and bring those. I will generally follow her pattern but with some modifications. You can find the pattern here: https://agilejack1.com/2018/10/21/annes-zipper-pouch-tutorial/

Materials:

Fabric – amount will depend on your bag size. You will need fabric for the outer panels, inner lining, pockets(optional), zipper tabs, and wrist handle. My bag samples range from 10”-12” wide and 8”-10” deep. If you stay within this range then a 13” square per section piece is sufficient. You will need 2.5” x 14” for handle fabric and 2” x 12” for zipper tabs. These can be same or contrasting fabrics to outer bag fabric. The outer panels (front and/or back) can be a whole piece of fabric but you may wish instead to piece, applique, or embellish (wool pennies, perle cotton thread, buttons, etc.). Bring sufficient materials to do this. If the pieced fabric needs to extend the width or depth of your bag be sure it is long enough. The back and front panel does not have to be the same. If you want to have a pocket or divider bring extra fabric.

Zipper- should be larger than the intended bag opening (12-14” zipper has worked for my bags). Regular zippers are fine i.e. you do not need heavy duty ones. Town and Country sell a good variety of color options. Choose color as you wish-to match or contrast the bag fabric.

Thread – regular cotton, or polyester. May wish to have several color choices available to match or contrast your fabrics.

Batting – prefer low loft fusible interfacing (available at Town and Country). You can use 80/20 or 100% cotton batting but it is thicker and will be bulkier around all seams and zipper area. You will need 2 pieces to be cut to the size of the unfinished bag front and back. (as per above 2 x 13” squares will suffice).

Equipment:

Sewing machine and usual gear (scissors, rotary cutter, extension cord, seam ripper, marking pencil, measuring tape, etc.).

Rulers – 6”x 24” or similar should cover all needs. A larger square ruler (12” or larger) and a smaller ruler (i.e. 6”) if you have them.

Small iron and ironing pad – not a lot of ironing is needed so one could easily share (i.e. one between 2 people or there will be two larger irons available for use by anyone).

Specialty sewing machine feet – a zipper foot is a must. The narrow zipper foot works really well.

Stitching –straight and zig zag stitching. Most machines offer this. Be sure to bring the appropriate sewing foot for using the zig zag stitch (it will have a larger opening space for the needle to go through).

Paper and pen – to take notes.
