Kalpathy Thyagaraja Aaradhana Centenary Celebrations

A legacy spanning 100 years

The Kalpathy Thyagaraja Aradhana was founded by Sri Rama Bhagavatar along with co-musicians of Carnatic music in January of 1924. Before 1924, every year, the musicians from Palakkad travelled to Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nādu, to participate in the Aradhana.

The Annual Aradhana takes place in Thiruvaiyaru where Thyagaraja attained Jeeva Samadhi. The aradhana is observed on Pushya-Bahula Panchami day when the saint attained "Jeeva samadhi", where the musicians render the saint's Pancharathna Kritis.

However in 1924 Rama Bhagavatar (1888-1957) and his co-musicians including Sri Subba iyer, Sri Seshan Bhagavatar, Sri Vichappa missed the connecting train to Trichy and consequently could not participate in the Thiruvaiyaru aradhana. After a troubled night, Sri Rama Bhagavatar decided to start the Aradhana at the Rajaram Swamigal Matom in Kalpathy.

Sri Rajaram Swamigal was a direct disciple of Thyagaraja swamigal. Today the place has a Hanuman temple and is also called Rama Dhyana Madom and Hanuman temple.

Sri Rama Bhagavatar, from 1924 till the time of his death in 1957 continued to observe the Thyagaraja aradhana in Kalpathy with co-musicians. The tradition of Thyagaraja Aradhana has continued uninterrupted and in 2023 completed 100 years.

On 30th of January 2024 at around 8am, when the 177th Thyagaraja Aradhana will be celebrated in Thiruvaiyaru, Kalpathy will observe the 101st Kalpathy Thyagaraja Aradhana. The celebrations will be held for 5 days from January 26th (Friday) to 30th January 2024 (Tuesday) at the Sree Viswanatha Swamy Temple Premises (Kundambalam) Kalpathy, Palakkad. The programs will include Unchivritti, Namasankeertanam, Carnatic Music vocal and instrumental concerts, Group Dance presentations and Upanyasams.

The family of Sri Rama Bhagavatar, called the Guruprasad family after the name of his home in the Agraharam, is sponsoring three days out of five days of the Centenary celebrations conducted by the Sri Thyagabrahma Aradhana committee in Kalpathy.

Only recently just ahead of the Kalpathy Ratholsavam of 2023 the Old Kalpathy Road was renamed Sri Rama Bhagavatar Road. The respected council members of the Palakkad Municipality unanimously agreed to the renaming of the road in memory of the great singer. By scanning the QR code the user can for scanning to reach the website dedicated to him.

As a part of the celebrations, online Carnatic music competitions were announced in September 2023 and entries were received upto 30th November 2023. Senior vidwans evaluated the entries received and selected the 5 winners, who will each receive a cash prize of Rs.5,000 when they perform on stage on 28th January 2024 in Kalpathy. In addition they will receive a memento and a certificate - all of above which will be sponsored by the Rama Bhagavatar Charitable Trust.

On 28th January 2024, Sunday from 8 am to 10 am, Each winner will be given a time of 20 minutes to perform on stage. At 10 am Sri Lakshminarayanan President of the Kalpathy Thyagabrahma Aaradhana Committee, Sri M R Ramachandran, Harmonium Vidwan and family of Rama Bhagavatar and a few family members will share memories of the 100 year Aradhana. The family of Rama Bhagavatar will distribute prizes to winners.

On 30th January 2024, Tuesday - on Pushya Bahula Panchami day - The Thygaraja Aradhana will be observed by all carnatic music gurus, vidawans, students and Rasikas at the Hanuman Temple in Kalpathy. The Vidwans will present the "Pancharatna kritis". The Pancharatna kritis were written in praise of the Hindu deity Rama. All the kritis, as is the case with almost all of Tyagaraja's compositions, are penned in Telugu, except the first one, which is composed in Sanskrit.

The Pancharatna Kritis are:

1. Jagadananda Karaka (Ragam Natai)

2. Duduku gala (Ragam Goula)

3. Sadhinchene (Ragam Aarabhi)

4. Kanakana Ruchira (Ragam Varali)

5. Endaro Mahanubhavulu (Shree Ragam)

Natai and Varali are the most ancient of the Carnatic ragas and date back to over a thousand years ago.

The legacy of the Kalpathy Thyagaraja Aradhana spans a 100 years. The celebration of the centenary in 2024 is a significant milestone. The tribute is dedicated to Saint Thyagaraja, the elders of the Agraharam, Carnatic musicians and our ancestors. The tribute will also be to the founding fathers of Kalpathy, who amidst great difficulties, migrated from the Cauvery delta to the banks of the Bharathapuzha.

100 വർഷത്തെ പാരമ്പര്യം

1924 ജനുവരിയിൽ കർണാടക സംഗീതത്തിലെ സഹസംഗീതജ്ഞരോടൊപ്പം ശ്രീരാമ ഭാഗവതർ സ്ഥാപിച്ചതാണ് കൽപ്പാത്തി ത്യാഗരാജ ആരാധന. 1924-ന് മുമ്പ് എല്ലാ വർഷവും പാലക്കാട്ടുനിന്നുള്ള സംഗീതജ്ഞർ തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ തഞ്ചാവൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ തിരുവയ്യരുവിലേക്ക് ആരാധനയിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ പോയിരുന്നു.

ത്യാഗരാജൻ ജീവസമാധിയിലെത്തിയ തിരുവൈയാറിലാണ് വാർഷിക ആരാധന നടക്കുന്നത്. പുഷ്യ-ബഹുല പഞ്ചമി ദിനത്തിൽ സന്യാസി "ജീവ സമാധി" നേടിയപ്പോൾ ആരാധന ആചരിക്കുന്നു, അവിടെ സംഗീതജ്ഞർ സന്യാസിയുടെ പഞ്ചരത്ന കൃതികൾ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

എന്നിരുന്നാലും, 1924-ൽ രാമഭാഗവതർക്കും (1888-1957) ശ്രീ സുബ്ബയ്യർ, ശ്രീ ശേശൻ ഭാഗവതർ, ശ്രീ വിച്ചാപ്പ എന്നിവരുൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള സഹ സംഗീതജ്ഞർക്കും ട്രിച്ചിയിലേക്കുള്ള കണക്ഷൻ ട്രെയിൻ നഷ്ടമായതിനാൽ തിരുവൈയാരു ആരാധനയിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. കലുഷിതമായ ഒരു രാത്രിക്ക് ശേഷം ശ്രീരാമ ഭാഗവതർ കൽപ്പാത്തിയിലെ രാജാറാം സ്വാമികൾ മഠത്തിൽ ആരാധന ആരംഭിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.

ത്യാഗരാജ സ്വാമികളുടെ നേരിട്ടുള്ള ശിഷ്യനായിരുന്നു ശ്രീ രാജാറാം സ്വാമികൾ. ഇന്ന് ഈ സ്ഥലത്ത് ഒരു ഹനുമാൻ ക്ഷേത്രമുണ്ട്, ഇതിനെ രാമ ധ്യാനമഠം എന്നും ഹനുമാൻ ക്ഷേത്രം എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നു.

ശ്രീരാമഭാഗവതർ 1924 മുതൽ 1957-ൽ മരിക്കുന്നത് വരെ കൽപ്പാത്തിയിൽ സഹ സംഗീതജ്ഞർക്കൊപ്പം ത്യാഗരാജ ആരാധന തുടർന്നു. ത്യാഗരാജ ആരാധനയുടെ പാരമ്പര്യം തടസ്സമില്ലാതെ തുടരുകയും 2023 ൽ 100 വർഷം പൂർത്തിയാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

2024 ജനുവരി 30 ന് രാവിലെ 8 മണിക്ക് തിരുവൈയാറിൽ 177-ാമത് ത്യാഗരാജ ആരാധന ആഘോഷിക്കുമ്പോൾ, കൽപ്പാത്തി 101-ാമത് കൽപ്പാത്തി ത്യാഗരാജ ആരാധന ആചരിക്കും. ജനുവരി 26 (വെള്ളി) മുതൽ 2024 ജനുവരി 30 (ചൊവ്വ) വരെ 5 ദിവസങ്ങളിലായി പാലക്കാട് ശ്രീ വിശ്വനാഥ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്ര പരിസരത്ത് (കുണ്ടമ്പലം) കൽപ്പാത്തിയിലാണ് ആഘോഷങ്ങൾ നടക്കുന്നത്. ഉഞ്ചിവൃത്തി, നാമസങ്കീർത്തനം, കർണാടക സംഗീത വോക്കൽ, ഇൻസ്ട്രുമെന്റൽ കച്ചേരികൾ, സംഘനൃത്ത അവതരണങ്ങൾ, ഉപന്യാസങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ പരിപാടികളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടും.

കൽപ്പാത്തിയിലെ ശ്രീ ത്യാഗബ്രഹ്മ ആരാധന സമിതിയുടെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തിൽ നടക്കുന്ന ശതാബ്ദി ആഘോഷങ്ങളുടെ അഞ്ചുദിവസങ്ങളിൽ മൂന്നുദിവസവും സ്‌പോൺസർ ചെയ്യുന്നത് ശ്രീരാമഭാഗവതരുടെ അഗ്രഹാരത്തിലെ വീടിന്റെ പേരുപറഞ്ഞ് ഗുരുപ്രസാദ് കുടുംബം എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്ന ശ്രീരാമഭാഗവതരുടെ കുടുംബമാണ്.

2023 ലെ കൽപ്പാത്തി രഥോത്സവത്തിന് തൊട്ടുമുമ്പ് പഴയ കൽപ്പാത്തി റോഡിന് ശ്രീരാമ ഭാഗവതർ റോഡ് എന്ന് പുനർനാമകരണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു. പാലക്കാട് നഗരസഭയിലെ ബഹുമാനപ്പെട്ട കൗൺസിൽ അംഗങ്ങൾ മഹാഗായകന്റെ സ്മരണയ്ക്കായി റോഡിന്റെ പേരുമാറ്റാൻ ഏകകണ്ഠമായി സമ്മതിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള കൂടുതൽ വിവരങ്ങൾ https://www.ramabhagavatar.com/ എന്നതിൽ ലഭ്യമാണ്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന വെബ്‌സൈറ്റിൽ എത്താൻ സ്‌കാൻ ചെയ്യുന്നതിനുള്ള ക്യുആർ കോഡ് ഉള്ളതിനാൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മയിലുള്ള നെയിം ബോർഡ് സവിശേഷമാണ്.

2024 ജനുവരി 30, ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച - പുഷ്യ ബഹുല പഞ്ചമി ദിനത്തിൽ - കൽപ്പാത്തിയിലെ ഹനുമാൻ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എല്ലാ കർണാടക സംഗീത ഗുരുക്കന്മാരും വിദവന്മാരും വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും രസികരും ചേർന്ന് ത്യാഗരാജ ആരാധന ആചരിക്കും. വിദ്വാൻമാർ "പഞ്ചരത്ന കൃതികൾ" അവതരിപ്പിക്കും. പഞ്ചരത്ന കൃതികൾ ഹിന്ദു ദൈവമായ രാമനെ സ്തുതിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് എഴുതിയത്.

കൽപ്പാത്തി ത്യാഗരാജ ആരാധനയുടെ പാരമ്പര്യം 100 വർഷത്തോളം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്നു. 2024 ലെ ശതാബ്ദി ആഘോഷം ഒരു സുപ്രധാന നാഴികക്കല്ലാണ്. ത്യാഗരാജ സ്വാമികൾക്കും അഗ്രഹാരത്തിലെ മുതിർന്നവർക്കും കർണാടക സംഗീതജ്ഞർക്കും നമ്മുടെ പൂർവ്വികർക്കും വേണ്ടി സമർപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടതാണ് ആദരാഞ്ജലി. കാവേരി ഡെൽറ്റയിൽ നിന്ന് ഭാരതപ്പുഴയുടെ തീരത്തേക്ക് വളരെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾക്കിടയിൽ കുടിയേറിയ കൽപ്പാത്തിയുടെ സ്ഥാപക പിതാക്കന്മാർക്കും ഞങ്ങളുടെ ആദരാഞ്ജലികൾ.
