Sri Gurubyo Namaha!
The assessment of received submissions for the 2024 KTAC - Kalpathy Thyagabramha Aradhana Centenary - Carnatic music competition has concluded.
The judges sat at 11am today to listen to the entries and around 3pm the 5 winners were selected. Emails to the winners have been sent out.
It was an exciting day of learning and insights for me. The highly experienced and learned judges Sri Swaminathan, Sri Seshadreeswaran, and Sri M R Ramachandran have made their selection very carefully.
They looked at
Ragam, Kirtanam, Neraval, Kalpanaswarams and Overall presentation before awarding marks. Later they were all collated and ranked for selection of the top 5.
Will share more details next week.
Radhe Krishna

Note:
The Kalpathy Thyagaraja Aradhana was started in Kalpathy, Palakkad by Sri Rama Bhagavatar and co musicians in 1924. For 100 years the Aradhana has been celebrated uninterrupted. The centenary event is in 2024 and the music competition is a part of the program lined up for the centenary. Come be a part of this divine celebration on 30th January 2024.
As far as I can remember, next to getting a copy of the deepavali edition of "Amudhasurabi" or "Kalki" (அமுதசுரபி, கல்கி தீபாவளி மலர்) the most exciting thing was getting a Tamil Daily calendar from the many shops on Usman road / Ranganathan street.
Appa ran a Pharmacy on Usman road, Chennai and in the 1970's every businessman in the area knew everyone else. Every year we got a good number of Monthly sheet and Daily sheet calendars. Every room in our home had a Daily sheet calendar. It was the go to for checking the Tithi. For detailed readings there was always the Panchangam inside Appa's puja box.
It had the list of holidays printed on the back and I used to read with great joy the holidays falling on a week day and with regret, those which fell on a Sunday - haha.
Every daily sheet had a Thirukural or a Proverb and home remedies கைவைத்தியம் - tips. I think the Chandrashtamam feature was added later. Somehow the 2.5 days stuck with me after a friend told to watch out for / anticipate an unfavorable turn of events.
My Periyappa used to check the "shoolam" direction and used to avoid traveling in the direction of Shoolam for the day. I wonder at the volume of information which they printed in such small area. It told the festivals in temples.
I check the "நல்ல நேரம்" good time and rahu Kalam, Yama gandam for the day when I make travel plans or important decisions. However Amma's wisdom and experience beats all the info in the daily sheet. She continues to be my Panchangam for making all important decisions.
The daily calendar has many uses past its time. Amma used to preserve the daily sheets which helped to light the kerosene / gas stove. The rear board if it had a God image ended up in the puja room or as a lid for the water vessel or as a hand fan when power went off.
My paternal Grandpa, who was a great Carnatic Musician, founded the Kalpathy Thyagaraja Aradhana in 1924 and for the centenary our family found it fit to give away to the folks in Kalpathy Agaraharam the daily sheet calendar.
For 2024, I am sure this one will adorn the walls of every home in the Agraharam and keep the memory of the great Carnatic musician.

Listening to a Ghana Parayanam always puts me into a trance. The learned pundits, when they repeat the syllables in various ways back and forth and in different patterns, fill the space with divine energy. It is pure bliss. For eons the Veda mantras, being revelations by Rishis for universal benefit, have been preserved without resort to writing, by such methods of recitation.
Every "samapthy" or conclusion of Veda Parayanam in the Agraharam temples is a "must-be-present" event for those desirous of receiving the vibrations effulgent with the grace of cosmos.
Arranging these parayanams in the Lakshminarayana Swamy temple in Old Kalpathy include the Pazhaya Kalpathi Veda Parayana Trust along with the Samooham.
In this video, listen to the genesis of the Trust and the efforts they take in inviting the Vedic pundits to continue, nurture and promote the tradition of Veda chanting.
Like Mahaperiyava promoted the "Pidi Arisi Thittam" we need to set up a "hundi" in our puja room and put a daily contribution into it and use it to fund organisations like the Pazhaya Kalpathi Veda Parayana Trust

The tradition of doing the Guru pooja and Thirtha Narayana pooja during the Kalpathy Thyagaraja Aradhana has continued without a break. During the centenary celebrations in 2024 on the Aradhana day Sri Balu Vadyar and Sri Kannan Vadyar will be leading the ceremonies as they have been doing for several years.
In the Aradhana the
Guru = One's spiritual teacher
Parama Guru = Guru of Gurus
Parameshti Guru = Supreme Guru's Guru
Parapara Guru = Guru of Parameshti Guru
are all prayed to and celebrated
Listen to the brief video where the learned Vadyar explain the proceedings.

For years, Bramhasri Ramesh Dravid Ghanapatigal has been an esteemed Vedic scholar, nurturing disciples globally from his home in Venkatesapuram Agraharam, Palakkad. His dedication to imparting Vedic teachings extends online, connecting hundreds of eager learners. In an inviting video, Sri Ghanapatigal extends a warm welcome to Bhagavatottamas, students, and rasikas of Carnatic Music to join the momentous Centenary celebrations of the Kalpathy Thyagaraja Aradhana in January 2024. His presence and invitation mark a significant call to honor this sacred event, and pay homage to the Saint whose songs are filled with Bhakthi, profound Vedantic truths, and elementary rational precepts.
"Paropakaram Artham Idam Shareeram" is a Sanskrit shloka that translates to "This body is for the benefit of others"
I find the dedication of Sri Viswanathan K V, (Ward Councilor, Kalpathy East, Ward 5, Palakkad Municipality), to the people of his Ward and various social causes inspiring and worthy of emulation by the youth of this place. His great concern for the cleanliness of the Kalpathy River, maintaining a garbage-free agraharam, etc., is followed by action, as evidenced by the social images I keep seeing and the positive feedback of the elders of his ward.
Sri Viswanathan is eager to establish a center within the Agraharam that showcases the heritage aspects of the village, encompassing Vedic culture, Carnatic music, Palakkad cuisine, and more. With daily busloads of visitors, including students, seeking an authentic Agraharam encounter, he envisions the center offering a comprehensive immersion/experience. This, he hopes, will be taken back to their towns, fostering a lasting connection with Kalpathy and its cherished heritage status.
In this video he welcomes folks from across this land to be a part of the Kalpathy Thyagaraja Aradhana, which is celebrating its centenary in 2024.

Janardhanan Anna is the first Namasankeertanam voice in Kalpathy I experienced as a kid. I remember walking the streets of the agraharam mesmerized by his resonant voice and the dolki beats. Every time I visit Palakkad, I made a point to visit his modest shop and buy a veshti or a towel. It made him happy that a local business was supported. More and more bhagavatas are now making the spiritual experience in Kalpathy better. But the sonorous voice of Sri Janardhanan and his devoutness can never be matched.
Here he requests all bhagavatas and agraharam folks to be present at the Unchavritti on 26th and 27th January which will start at the Hanuman Temple in Kalpathy at 8am on both days.
Rama Bhagavatar Charitable trust has arranged webcast of all sessions of the programs. There will be a brief Unchavritti on 30th being the Aradhana day which will be conducted by him.
Please join the celebrations and the Unchavritti and receive the blessings of Thyagaraja Swamy!
