This semester, we completed several workshops that helped us better understand our laboratory work and prepared us to be successful in future experiments. These workshops focused on building foundational skills, reinforcing safety procedures, and helping us become more comfortable using laboratory equipment.
One important workshop was the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) lab. In this workshop, we learned how to locate Safety Data Sheets and how to properly read and interpret the information provided. This helped us understand chemical hazards, safety precautions, and proper handling procedures. Learning how to use an SDS is essential in science, especially in fields like biochemistry and forensic science, where working with chemicals safely is critical.
We also learned about the importance of proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including when and why it must be worn in the lab. Understanding lab safety procedures ensures not only our own protection but also the safety of others.
In addition, we practiced using different laboratory tools and equipment. For example, we learned how to properly weigh substances using a balance, which is a fundamental skill in chemistry experiments. These workshops helped strengthen my confidence in the lab and improved my technical skills.
Overall, the workshops have played an important role in helping me become more knowledgeable, responsible, and prepared in a laboratory setting.
