[Goal]
Establishment of good chili production and postharvest management technologies in Pakistan
Project duration:
2021~2023
Implementing Agency:
PARC-AZRC Umerkot
Budget:
160,000$ (Korea 130,000, Pakistan 30,000)
Activities:
- Introduction of chili nursery
- Introduction of grading, washing and drying
Expected Outputs:
Increase of quality and safe chili production
1. 20 percent increase of farm income compared to conventional approaches
2. 10 percent postharvest loss are reduced by good management practices
3. Reduce maximum total aflatoxin level in dried chilies to less than 10µg kg-1by EU guideline
4. Consumers can access safe chili from hazard materials such as aflatoxin Farmers can access new technical methods which will increase yield and quality
Impact of KOPIA's chili project in Pakistan
"KOPIA created a good impact on chilli processing particularly quality drying of chillies after washing of chilli fruits which is a new aspect in chilli drying in the area."
Is KOPIA's have role in quality chili production in Pakistan
"Initially farmers of area dry their chillies in open sun on the open ground which favored the multiplication of fungi to grow vigorously and produced aflatoxin too high levels i.e., 50-100 μg/kg even more as compared to acceptable levels of than 10 μg/kg in the produce which degraded the quality of chillies and in result in near past 134 ship consignments were rejected from America and Europe. Then Govt. and other organizations take initiatives and distributed green sheet on subsidize rates to farmers for chilli drying but they were not succeeded very less. But KOPIA introduced solar energy dehydration plant which not only produces quality chillies with less than 05 μg/kg but in very less time of only 30 hours as compared to farmer practice which takes 8-15 days with low quality dried chillies."
Future of KOPIA introductions
"I think new introductions launched by KOPIA for chilli quality drying i.e., solar energy dehydration plant along with washing unit have very bright future in the field of post-harvesting particularly in drying by producing export quality chilli product within a very short time but one thing should be considered that operating source is very much expensive in Pakistan i.e., for operating two drying machines and on washing unit minimum 25 KV solar system is required and its current value/price in Pakistan is about 5 million Pakistani rupees which is beyond the reach of a even a medium holding farmer. This is the reason farmers are watching for cheap structures.
Any other option can KOPIA utilizes for achieving the goal
For keeping the demand in the mind KOPIA can utilizes other options like for drying utilization of solar tunnel dryer with some amendments Instead of using solar energy dehydration plant or utilizing any other cheap operating source, machines with less power to operate etc. or any other possible solution from KOPIA as local/small holding farmers can benefited."
