first time ever #6483 regional spelling event.
40 in attendance with representatives from councils
1st Place decided on word "wield"---number 235 of 250 words available, page 41 of spelling bee booklet.

St Louise de Marillac’s Colonnade Room was the site of the 2014 Annual Spelling Bee sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 6483, on Sunday, January 19, 2014. Eight students from St Louise de Marillac and St John of the Cross competed in front of their parents, grandparents and siblings for honor and prizes. Educators Sue Michalowski of St John’s and Marianne Voss of St Louise presided as judges. Dave Rogers of Council 6483 acted as “Pronouncer”. Myles VanCura of Council 6483 organized this year’s event. Also in attendance from Council 6483 were Craig and Carol
Jacklin, Joe Discipio, Pat and Beth Olson, and Norb Pacholski. Immediately following the spelling competition, contestants were invited back to the stage for a trivia competition, a new wrinkle this year from the event organizer Myles VanCura. Refreshments and happy socializing completed the evening. And the winner is…Spelling competition:
1st place - David Sullivan, St Louise - $50 (Council 6483)
2nd place - Kathleen Nolan, St John - $25 Panera Gift Card (Myles VanCura)
3rd place - Bernadette Miao, St John - $15 Panera Gift Card (Myles VanCura)

I am a member of Lagrange Council since 1973. I was looking for youth activities to support from the beginning. I have sponsored the annual spelling bee and essay contest with the help of my wife and members of the council for about 30 years. We offer both activities to four area Catholic schools. It is important to recognize and honor students for academic success.
