Here you'll find the information needed for art requirements!
Kodai Ryu aims to be an ARPG that is inclusive of all styles and skills, and to above all else have fun! With this in mind, we do have some pointers and guidelines for backgrounds, percentages and bonuses to help keep things level for all players!
Body Percentages
Pictured above is a general demonstration on body percentages and what each range qualifies for. In order to pass for an activity, a Kodai must be be present within the full body range (75% or more of the body clearly visible).
Backgrounds
For Kodai Ryu, backgrounds require three elements in order to pass for activities, which do not include basic 'ground and sky'. Elements such as rocks, trees, flowers, mountains, buildings, clouds... they all count toward elements!
To the left we have a basic example of what we look for; mountains, clouds, flowers, rocks, ocean etc.
Not every piece you make needs to be the best art/lit you've ever created, an ARPG is about having fun! We do however have some small requirements when it comes to reusing the same elements or becoming too rushed/simple, which are explained below!
Repeating Elements/Poses
To encourage keeping things unique, repeating backgrounds (or poses) with the same few elements across several submitted pieces may be asked to altered in the queue! This is mostly referred to as 'Tiles' in the ARPG community, but there are a few different names or it. Usually all this will require is a couple of unique elements that are not found on the other pieces, to avoid using the same background over and over.
If there are multiple repeating backgrounds/poses, nothing will be instantly denied! We will always contact you and give you options for the changes needed, and the choice on what you'd rather go with.
Below is a simple example of same repeated elements with little change!
The above images meet the technical criteria for the background bonus, however as they have the same features repeated over and over, these are the types of images over several pieces that we'd need some variation to be seen in! Changing the pieces to have different elements, angles, lighting, features, plants, birds etc can make two pieces look entirely different!
Spliced backgrounds (one large background split into 2-3 pieces) do not quite fall into this space, as spliced backgrounds can typically still hold unique elements and look different from one another. And 2-3 images that look similar but hold different elements are not the pieces that fall into this type of issue!
Rendered
Rendered is a special bonus that can be applied to pieces that go above the basic requirements! 'Rendering' counts when there are hand drawn details added to elements that already exist in the piece, and with minimal 'stamp' and 'art program texture' use.
This is a personal bonus, that applies to the artist/writers Kodai that created the piece!
For instance, this would include things like pawprints and detailed shading in snow, multi layers/detailed shading on Kodai, cracks and definition in rocks and wood texture in shrines. The details deserve to be celebrated!
Rendering elements should cover around at least 50% of the image, so intense detail is not needed on the entire image!
Below are some examples of pieces that qualify for rendered bonuses!
This piece features multi layers of shading and hand textured rocks, while the back mountains are less texture and aesthetically simple in appearance. This is an example of around 50%.
This is an example of the entire piece with rendering and details, a piece that doesn't contain a lot more elements than is required, but instead has lots of texture and definition within the rocks, water and shrine!
Not all rendering is texture! It includes adding plenty of small details like the sand shading, water spots, grass stalks, tree details etc. Lots of elements that go far beyond the typical 3 count.
Rendered in Literature
Rendering in literature, while different to artwork, is demonstrated by going above and beyond the word count needed. The Rendered bonus will come into play 200+ words after the required word count, dependant on the amount of Kodai present.
For Example:
1 Kodai Activity = 800 Words
1,000+ Words qualifies for Rendered bonus
3 Kodai Activity = 1,200 Words
1,400+ Words qualifies for Rendered Bonus
The Rendered bonus does not stack per 200 words (to match with artwork), and will occur once on top of the JP count.
Simplified Art
Simplified art is only referred to in cases of a larger decrease in typical details, or appear 'rushed' across a longer period of time. These usually consist of less details such as missing fur, missing facial features, or missing markings/obvious details, and generally appear more 'hurried' to fit basic requirements. This includes using the same poses repeatedly. This does not refer to cute, cartoony, experimental or stylized pieces! The JP for simplified art is halved (for affected areas) due to less details used, though this does not immediately happen! We will contact you to explain what is happening, and give you options to move forward!
It's important to note that style and simplified art are not the same - your style of artwork and experimentation is always considered.
This is looked at on a user gallery/case by case basis, and we will let you know if the art is straying too far into that territory!
JP Sheets
JP Sheets are a great source of experimentation with poses and anatomy! While Kodai allows for JP sheets, we have a cap of 5x fullbodies or 5x Headshots per JP sheet (or, a mix of both up to 5!). This is in place to make for easier counting for admins!
JP sheets should also avoid using the same poses over and over! If they start to look very similar each time, then we may ask you to change the pose, or have the JP halved instead.
