Cultural heritage in Italy with special focus on

sheep farming and fishing

Abruzzo has a finelly-tuned equilibrium between nature, still dominating the landscape, and the stratified presence of humanity: small villages dotted across the territory, churches, castles, mansions, and the age-old rural and pastoral tradition.

Transhumance, that’s the ancient seasonal migration of sheperds and sheeps from the Appennine pasturesto the Apulian Tavoliere plain along the sheep tracks, has been a constant presence in Abruzzo's history from roman times.

Abruzzese territory still shows signs of that coming and going of humans and flocks: sextion of the ancient sheep track are still visible on the Navelli plain. The extensive plateau, famous for its fine saffron, is now marked by the presence of the sheep track.

The Sagittario valley and the Abruzzo National Park are located in a beautiful natural contest with its gorges that contains artistic heritage and folcklore tradition. The old town centre is marked by the quality of its architecture, consisting in small lanes often with stares, small squares, town gates and underpasses, monumental fontains, buildings in carved stones with a rich production of artistic portals gracing the town and evidence of its economic wealth brought by a particular flourishing sheep farming up until the 19th century. This industy was mainly based on wool, dairy products and craft production, especially lace and gold jewellery.

The city of San Vito Chietino is located on a ridge that extends seaward. The view of this point of the coast is characterized by several examples of Trabocchi, the characteristic fishing platforms along the Chieti stretch of the Adriatic Sea.

The open-air excursions will be joined by the visit of exhibition paths, where archeological finds of Abruzzo's prehistoric and protohistoric sites are combined with items from the region's farming and shepherd culture.

The mobility will enhance the European citizenship and solidarity by personal relationship and face to face contact.
