5a: Design professional learning based on needs assessments and frameworks for working with adults to support their cultural, social-emotional and learning needs.
5b: Build the capacity of educators, leaders and instructional teams to put the ISTE Standards into practice by facilitating active learning and providing meaningful feedback.
5c: Evaluate the impact of professional learning and continually make improvements in order to meet the schoolwide vision for using technology for high-impact teaching and learning.
Artifact Description: The Digital Tools: Using Technology to Showcase Learning is a professional development that was put together by Brian Yang and myself to help staff learn about easy simple changes they can do to make their classroom and teaching more 21st century friendly. This artifact was model after the ISTE 5a standard to build a professional learning plan the helps supports the learning needs of the school. Mr. Yang and I worked on this together in our CSUF Master Program. We discussed some problems that get in the way with late adopters of technology. We both came to the same conclusion that we need to start with the basics for staff of learning how to turn old assignments into digital copies. These new digital documents are easier to share and build digital classrooms with. Once teachers were able to complete these tasks then they would be able to build Learning management systems that would better help their students.
Implementation: The professional development was given in an in-service for staff in the spring of 2019. Many teachers had a need to learn how to take old curriculum and transfer it into digital documents. There were three sessions that were 20 minutes each. This was planned using the ISTE standard 5a of designing a professional development around the needs of the learner.
Impact of Artifact: Artifact 1 helped address a need at the school by helping the staff learn basic process of modifying already proven work into a digital form that teachers can share easily through their Google Classroom or their PowerSchool accounts. This connects to the intended outcomes of the ISTE 5a standard of designing a professional learning based on learners needs.
Artifact Description: The technology support survey was a Google Form that I made to assess the needs for a professional development for staff. The survey collects basic information from teachers and administration to understand their knowledge of modern technology that is used in the classroom and interest in support in that area. Following the ISTE standard 5a that assessment is important for addressing needs. The survey also looks at how are teachers supporting math with their students. The survey is made up of 6 questions and starts with a video showing the need for modern technology in the classroom. The results showed that most teachers feel comfortable with their ability, and use a wide range of applications to facilitate learning, with the most used ones where G Suite apps, Goalbook.app, and Quizlet. An interesting finding was that only 3/4 of staff knew what a learning management system is. This is a application to help build a digital classroom and manage classwork, grades, discussion, and announcements. That corresponds with 3/4 of the teachers also wanted to learn how to build a digital home room. This was the first step of addressing school needs. After this I worked with administration to build a professional development to address these needs with teachers. The professional development was then was help at our bi-annual summit for staff in fall of 2020. This was guided by the ISTE 5b standard to build a team of educators, leaders and instructional teams to put the ISTE Standards into practice by facilitating active learning and providing meaningful feedback.
Implementation: First I approached the administration about the need for a professional development around technology. Following the ISTE Standard 5b of building a team of educators, leaders and instructional teams. We talked and wanted to find the need of the school for one. So I built this survey, shown in artifact 2, to address the needs of the staff. Then I found different teachers then will change agents and had them look over the survey be fore sending it out in a weekly meeting. After I used the ISTE standard 5a to evaluate the needs of these learners for the future professional development.
Artifact Impact: The survey was a great tool to help inform me of school needs for educators in the need for a technology based professional development. This was guided by ISTE standard 5a to gather information to drive learning groups in schools. Working with he administration and teachers was guided by the ISTE standard 5b to build a team of educators, leaders and instructional teams to put the ISTE Standards into practice by facilitating active learning and providing meaningful feedback.
Reflection: Being a professional learner facilitator for two different schools has taught me that there are many different needs for all staff. I have a strong grasp of ISTE standard 5a Design professional learning based on needs assessments and frameworks for working with adults to support their cultural, social-emotional and learning needs. By building a professional development and learning to address needs of a school shown in artifact 1 and 2. Understanding your audience is import in any professional development. Integrating technology is no different. I have also grown on ISTE standard 5b: Build the capacity of educators, leaders and instructional teams to put the ISTE Standards into practice by facilitating active learning and providing meaningful feedback. In artificate 1 & 2 shows that I am using the ISTE standards to help guide my practice as a professional learner facilitator. Using surveys to gain knowledge of staff's understanding and working teachers and administration to help me build professional developments. I am still growing at becoming better at ISTE standard 5c: Evaluate the impact of professional learning and continually make improvements in order to meet the schoolwide vision for using technology for high-impact teaching and learning. I plan on building more feedback surveys and follow-up meetings, using Flipgrid or Zoom applications.
