Artifact Description:
Here are two different types of software for students to use in the classroom. These two apps Brainscape and Newsfeed Defenders are in the Slides presentation to the left. Brainscape is a drill and practice software in which users study flashcards that utilizes an adaptive algorithm in order to enhance users’ learning pace. This is a great tool for teachers to use to help student memorize vocabulary and key concepts for any subject. The second application is called Newsfeed Defenders. This application is an online interactive game and simulation software published by iCivics aimed at providing players with information about “the standards of journalism” and how online posts become viral. These applications can be helpful to you for understanding how to improve your classroom with modern applications for student learning. Also, below is a a video I made to help students understand the difference between valid and invalid internet resources. This was put together following the ISTE standard 3b to partner with fellow educators to identify the digital content to deploy in teachers classrooms.
Implementation:
After researching these applications with my cohort at CSUF Edtech program for 518A, I went back and shared the knowledge with my school site. First, I shared it with my fellow science and social studies teachers to see what they thought about it. Then, I asked them if they thought they could use the applications in their classroom. I asked them to get back to me with a couple of ideas that they thought they would be able to use it for. Following the the ISTE standard 3b of sharing important digital content with teachers according to standards.
Impact: The Brainscape was a hit with many of the teachers. They found it a great resource to gain understanding of what vocabulary students understood and what they did not. The iCivics did not go over so well with the teachers. They liked the idea, but did not find many uses for it. When some of the teachers tried to use it in their class, the students found it hard to understand. Even with the application broken down and explained to them, they did not find it useful. This in-depth analysis allowed the teachers to see whether that was a use for the application or not. Using ISTE standard 3b helped identify how to work with fellow educators then share those findings with others that could use them in the classroom.
3c. Partner with educators to evaluate the efficacy of digital learning content and tools to inform procurement decisions and adoption.
Artifact Description:
Artifact 2, Validating Internet Resources and Sites video is a short 4 minute video that goes over the steps to evaluating the website. Those teachers then shared it with their students, to help build a common understanding of the process of validating internet resources and sites. A core concept of this standard is helping staff evaluate digital learning content to be better at adopting it into the classroom. This was guided by my understanding of the ISTE standard 3c., to partner with educators to evaluate digital tools.
Implementation: Validating Internet Resources and Sites videowas shared with staff to help them learn how to identify valid internet resources. I reached out to teachers and evaluated who needed help to identify internet resources. This was mostly with the English, History, and Science teacher, because they use internet research in their class for essay writing. After I shared the video with them as explained in ISTE standard 3c. to help educators evaluate digital resources.
Impact: Teachers enjoyed the the video and shared it with their students and other members of the staff. Teachers were able to adopt the ideas and easily incorporate the ideas into students day to day research. Using ISTE standard 5c helped guide me to help other teachers understand how to evaluate digital resources for themselves and to share with students to validate them too.
Refection
Working with other educators in my 518 class at CSUF helped me understand how different schools use technology and what their needs are. This relates back to standard 3a of the ISTE Coach Standards. The work I have done with the CSUF Edtech program has deepened my expertise of being a mentor to fellow teachers. In standard 3b, it states to partner with other educators to identify digital learning content that is culturally relevant. This is shown in the Artifact 1 above that as a team we worked together and learned new digital learning content, that I then shared with my fellow staff. The Rocket launch that I described in artifact number 1 shows my competency in standards 3c, partnering with educators to evaluate learning content and tools to help understand the the decision to adapt the technology or not. I am still growing in standard 3d, trying to find better ways to help personalize support for educators outside my subject area. I am learning how to better support basic English and Math skills to better promote learning across all subjects and how they can be widely incorporated to improving student learning.
