1a. Create a shared vision and culture for using technology to learn and accelerate transformation through the coaching process.
1b. Facilitate equitable use of digital learning tools and content that meet the needs of each learner.
1c. Cultivate a supportive coaching culture that encourages educators and leaders to achieve a shared vision and individual goals.
1d. Recognize educators across the organization who use technology effectively to enable high-impact teaching and learning.
1e. Connect leaders, educators, instructional support, technical support, domain experts and solution providers to maximize the potential of technology for learning.
For this standard, I am helping my school build a better understanding of how to safely use technology in the classroom. This is a standard that all stakeholders understand and value, and everyone from staff to students can make sure that we are keeping each other safe when using technology. Sharing the standard with staff first can help promotes a better group understanding of new ways to use technology safely and effectively. This group understanding can then be used to make a shared vision for the rest of the school.
In 2019, I mastered this standard by building a wiki website for instructional design with my peers in 518 A/B. I then shared the wiki with fellow teachers at my school site. This helped a variety of staff, such as administration, teachers, and aids, to learn different techniques of instructional design. This helped them build classrooms that fit 21st century students.
I showed growth in standard 1b by using my research to share with staff at my school. The first step I took to take an active role was to enroll in my masters program at CSUF. Here I began learning the impact of technology use with students. This gave me a base understanding of students needs and abilities with technology. By understanding the needs of students, I could then share those ideas with administration and fellow teachers. This process of sharing my findings helped others create more engaging classroom experiences for students.
Description of the Artifacts
This is the Slides presentation that I gave to my fellow staff members at Anaheim Unified High School District at Orangeview middle school, in 2019. This was to help the staff understand the Acceptable Use Policy and how the use of distance education can help teachers stay connected with their students. Additionally, there is a wiki website that my team made in 518A/B for helping fellow educators learn about different instructional models that can be used for teacher/student teaching.
Implementation
I gave the presentation in our weekly meeting with our Science department. I first sent out an email with the the Slides and the research I did on the topic. At the meeting, I gave a 10 minute presentation on our district's AUP and where they could find it. I talked about the importance of protecting our students information. I also discussed distance learning and ways in which they could transform their classroom into a 21st century learning experience with a Hybrid class. I explained that students can do some of the reading and note taking at home so they can use the classroom time for more experiments and discussion of topics.
Impact
The impact that it had on teachers was that they were able to understand the importance of the district's AUP. Many teachers understood there was one, but did not even know what it said. This helped bring them up to date on the policy in the district and gave them an opportunity to discuss it as a group. Teachers also found it enlightening to learn about some of the new instructional models out there. Veteran teachers told me that they learned some new techniques that they would like to try in their class. They wanted to bookmark the resource that I had made for them of the different instructional models.
Reflect
Having done the research in my class, I felt confident going in front of my fellow teachers to share my findings. This allowed me to gain competency in standard 1, identifier a, in the ISTE standards. This also gave me a strong understanding of why the AUP was important to the school and why that the staff needed to be updated on the policies. This showed a growing understanding of 1b in the ISTE standards. Also, I used the research to help my fellow professional educators learn some of the new technologies they can employ in their class. Working with fellow teachers to learn new technology and methods of using it in their class helped me apply the ISTE standard of leadership as well. I have worked with my schools team for the last two years on building a community of supportive coaching culture that encourages a shared goal of digital integration into classroom instruction as outlined in standards 1c. I am still growing in standards 1d and 1e where I work outside my subject to incorporate other teachers and staff members.
