My master's research project entitled, "May I have the Definition of Culture? Co-constructing Camaraderie and Competition at the Scripps National Spelling Bee," explored how the Bee's young competitors construct a supportive culture of camaraderie amidst a fierce, nationally televised competition.
Through interviews and focus groups with former spellers, I investigated how the spellers balanced the individual competition with their desire for connection, as well as how the Bee community constructed an environment where the spellers felt safe enough to thrive.
I presented my findings to the Scripps National Spelling Bee team in July, 2024, providing insight that they will use in planning the Bee's centennial celebration.
I also presented my research at the National Communication Association Annual Convention in November, 2024 and will present it at the Central States Communication Association Annual Convention in April, 2025.
Since 2021, I have worked on the Scripps National Spelling Bee's Social Media team, sharing the bee-hind the scenes buzz with digital audiences through Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram, including feed posts, stories, and reels. I also provide word-by-word live competition updates on Twitter / X, crafting a humorous pun based on the word's definition or etymology approximately every two minutes. I have created content recognizing the Bee's national brand sponsors, including The Jimmy Dean Brand, Hillshire Farms, Pilot Pens, and Merriam-Webster.
In 2022 and 2023, I was also named to the Bee's College Crew, serving as College Crew Captain in 2023. I led a team of 12 interns in creating a memorable experience for nearly 250 spellers and their families. We gained incredible experience in coordinating a major event while striving to help every speller feel like a champion.
Competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2013 and 2014 changed my life. My entire family was stung by the spelling bee, and Bee Week became some of our fondest memories together. We returned to cheer on my sister when she competed in 2015 and 2016.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee helped me find myself and my confidence to achieve my dreams, introducing me to a diverse group of inspiring individuals, united by a love of words. I was struck by how supportive and celebratory the community was; despite competing "against" each other, every speller genuinely wanted to see everyone else succeed. I have striven to carry that uplifting, motivating energy into all of my endeavors since, hoping to always construct the same life-changing impact for others that the Scripps National Spelling Bee did for me.
