Sycamore Sam has always wanted to go to Indiana State University, but the first day comes with a big question: will Sam be able to make friends in college?
Every kid can relate to Sycamore Sam's first day of school jitters, and Sam's delightful adventures will inspire children to dream about going to college themselves. Through beloved campus traditions as well as new - sometimes mischievous - curiosities, Sam finds new friends at Indiana State University and learns what it means to be a Sycamore.
In 2021, my dreams of becoming an author came true when I was awarded one of Indiana State University's inaugural McKee Fellowship. With this grant, I created "Sam Becomes a Sycamore" and managed all aspects of the project, from editing my own writing to coordinating with my printing vendor.
Most importantly, the Fellowship enabled me to create magic in my community. Sycamore Sam and I visited every second grade classroom in the Vigo County School Corporation to share our story with students. We engaged the students in deep conversations about college, about Indiana State, and about giving back to their community.
At the end of our visit, we gave each student a book to take home. Access to age-appropriate books is one of the most significant factors and predictors in a child's future success; Sam Becomes a Sycamore enabled me to combine my love of reading and my love of Indiana State and make a positive impact for local students.
