In my Advanced Multimedia Production course, I created a virtual reality environment for Facebook Oculus using Unity. Designed as an immersive presentation of my master's research project, my virtual reality environment places the user onstage at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, surrounded by the sights and sounds described by my research participants. As the user interacts with the environment, they hear my voice reading quotes from my research and experience changes in the environment based on the emotions conveyed.
Analyzing research into leadership, organizational culture, and organizational narratives, I sought to understand how members construct culture, particularly on college campuses. I also sought to understand how universities presented these cultures in their recruitment tactics, including their websites and social media. I proposed an examination into Rose-Hulman's campus culture through student interviews, which would lead to a storytelling campaign representing the campus culture through the student's lived experiences.
Curious about how higher education institutions could best utilize social media to achieve their goals, I researched strategies for incorporating humor into social media posts. I drew from studies and case studies across industries, including advertising, to understand how universities can better give human traits to their brand and respond to external events on social media.
My organizational communication class created our own "organization" to make a visible impact on our community. We collected bottle caps to recycle into "Buddy Benches" for schools and parks, promoting sustainability, accessibility, and kindness in our community.
As a graduate student, I led a team of eight undergraduates in establishing a network of connections and resources across our community, including partnerships with Mayor Brandon Sakbun, Vigo County Solid Waste Management District, and Rose-Hulman. We planned and hosted a banquet to show appreciation for each of our community partners, who helped us collect enough for four benches to be placed around our community.
I critically reviewed Barthes' theory of semiotics, which proposes that a symbol and a signified concept combine in our minds to form a sign system. I then applied this theory to the recontextualization of original content in the generation of memes, TikToks, GIFs, and emojis to understand how some content successfully achieves virality.
As a lifelong avid Disney fan, I have always been curious about how the company has maintained a consistent brand image across decades of change and expansion. For my undergraduate Honors thesis, I examined Disney's leadership, marketing practices, immersive brand experiences, and storytelling techniques to apply their insights to other industries.
