Kilkivan has a rich history. First inhabited by the Wakka Wakka tribe of the Australian Aboriginal peoples, and settled by Europeans in the 1840s. Queensland’s first gold discovery was at Kilkivan in 1852 and subsequent findings escalated into a gold rush in the 1860s.
Kilkivan is one of the few towns on the Bicentennial National Trail. There is a stone plaque which commemorates the opening of the trail in 1988. This trail was originally known as the National Horse Trail, and is one of the longest multi-use, non-motorized, self-reliant trails in the world, stretching 5,330 kilometers from Cooktown, Queensland, through NSW and theACT, to Healsville, 60 km north-east of Melbourne.
To celebrate Kilkivan's rich History, the Kilkivan Community Gardens and Railway Market hold a "Walk Through Time" Festival. This is a great time for locals and others to join in a fun event, to dress up, and come out to play.
Come in any costume from the PAST, be it colonial, medieval, Stoneage, Industrial, or Post Colonial. Or if the kids want to come as Spiderman or tinkerbell, Im sure we can find a spot for that too.
