In high school, being part of such a diverse campus was truly an eye-opening experience of the world around me. I have learned about the different cultures around me and their values. I have learned the importance of fighting not just for my own rights, but for those around me as well. Through this learning, I have made it a priority to diversify our writing and better recognize more of the student population.
Wolf Howl Featured People - Sheet1.pdfI implemented this Excel sheet this year as Editor-in-Chief, and I ran it entirely on my own. As my time on the staff progressed, I noticed a pattern: we kept including the same people over and over again, issue after issue. To fix this, I created a spreadsheet and, after seeing who each reporter was interviewing, checked it to see whether they had been featured in previous issues. If they had, I told them they needed to interview someone else. This process has helped diversify who we include in our issues and ensure more of our student body is represented.
The Unity Assembly is Chandler High's biggest assembly and was my favorite to cover. The Unity Assembly is a variety of performers who showcase their cultural performances for the entire school. I covered the Unity Assembly in both my sophomore and junior years, and the work I put into it only increased. My sophomore year, as a reporter, I took photos only. Even as a reporter, I wanted to make sure every participating club was included, especially if the photos would be posted anywhere. In my junior year, as an editor, I created a spread for the 2025 edition of the Arts Issue, shown beside. I wanted to make sure we interviewed many people, including the teacher who organizes the assembly. I was extremely proud of how diverse the content was and how much of it we were able to collect.
12-13 unity assembly.pdfMy staff was extremely diverse. The staff includes many members of the LGBTQ+ community, athletes, men and women of color, and more. I have loved working with a diverse staff for the last 3 years, and leading them for 2. It has taught me that there is so much more out there to learn, and every person you meet has their own story; you just have to be bold enough to hear it.
