Commitment to Diversity
Being part of such a diverse campus has truly been an eye opening experience to the world around me. I have gained knowledge of the different cultures that surround me and their values. I have learned the importance of fighting for not just my own rights, but those around me as well. By learning all this, I have made it a priority to diversify our writing and recognize more of the student population.
This excel sheet is something that I implemented this year as Editor-in-Chief and it is something that I solely run. As my time on the staff progressed, I noticed a pattern that we were including the same people over and over again, issue after issue. To help fix this, I created this spread sheet and after seeing who each reporter was interviewing, I would check the spread sheet to see if they had been featured in our previous issues. If they had, I would tell them that they need to interview someone else. This process has helped diversify who is being included in our issues and ensured more of our student body is being included.
The Unity Assembly is Chandler High's biggest assembly, and my favorite to cover. The Unity Assembly is a variety of performers who showcase their cultural performances for the entire school. I covered the Unity Assembly both my sophomore and junior years and the work I put into my coverage only increased. My sophomore year, as I was only a reporter, I solely took photos. Even as a reporter, I wanted to make sure that every club who participated was included, especially if the photos were to be posted anywhere. My junior year, having the role as an editor, I got to make a spread for the 2025 edition of the Arts Issue which is shown beside. I wanted to make sure that many people were interviewed, including the teacher who organizes the assembly. I was extremely proud of how diverse the content was and how much of it we were able to collect.
My staff has always been an extremely diverse group of individuals. There are numerous members of the LGBTQ+ community, athletes, men and women of color, and more. I have loved working with a diverse staff my last 3 years, and leading them for 2. It has taught me that there is so much more out there to learn and every person you meet has their own story, you just have to be bold enough to hear it.
