Ozone depletion is the thinning of Earth’s upper atmosphere ozone layer which is primarily caused by the release of chemicals containing gaseous chlorine or bromine from industry and other human activities. The places that are most affected are the polar regions, especially Antarctica. Ozone depletion is a major problem because it increases the amount of ultraviolet radiation (UV) that increases the rates of skin cancer, eye cataracts, and genetic and immune system damage. This UV radiation (UVB-rays) does substantial damage to crops and marine ecosystems as well.
