My Teaching

This invisible leader, who gets things done in such a way that people think they did it all themselves, isn’t one who manipulates others from behind the scenes; just the opposite. Again, it’s a matter of “doing without doing”: uncompetitive, unworried, trustful accomplishment, power that is not force. - Laozi

“The greatest sign of success for a teacher… is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’” - Maria Montessori

I have come to believe that my job is in setting up environments where students learn. Didactic teaching may be a part of that environment, but it does not have to be.

Toward that end, I make extensive use of student-centered approaches, particularly Socratic seminar and self-directed learning (Click on either one to see what my classrooms look like.)
