Pink October

In Kampala’s Kawempe neighborhood, the Sudanese refugee community turned an ordinary Sunday into a day of learning, laughter, and empowerment. On October 19, 2025, they gathered at a local school to host a breast cancer awareness event as part of Women’s Health Month. Women arrived with their children in tow, filling the schoolyard with the sounds of play and conversation while, inside, a workshop on early cancer testing and self-examination took place. A local psychologist led an open discussion about mental well-being, encouraging women to share their fears and experiences, something rarely spoken about openly back home in Sudan.

The event, organized by Samia Mukhtar, a refugee from Nyala, Darfur, was more than just an educational session; it was a moment of community strength and connection. Using her background in communication, Samia brought together volunteers, health workers, and neighbors to create a space where women could learn without shame, ask questions freely, and feel supported. The day showed how even in displacement, resilience thrives, and how women who have lost so much can still build hope, healing, and awareness for one another.
