Hope After War

2024-ongoing

The Conflict that began in Sudan in April 2023 left behind countless IDPs and refugees. As one of them, I have witnessed how underrepresented the stories of those fleeing war remain. Sudanese people worldwide are struggling to rebuild their lives in new places, yet even seeking refuge has become increasingly difficult. Egypt is nearly inaccessible due to visa restrictions, Libya poses severe safety risks, South Sudan is among the most expensive routes to Juba, and Ethiopia leaves Sudanese refugees stranded in forests under the rain, denying them the right to register for asylum.

Despite these hardships, my project aims to tell the stories of those who have become refugees in these countries, but it started in Uganda, where I became a refugee, documenting their struggles, their resilience, and the challenges they faced to get there. I seek to highlight the bright side of their lives while documenting their grief and experiences. I have met artists and entrepreneurs who lost everything and had to start over, children born in exile, and others who will grow and study in displacement. I have met single mothers who risked the perilous roads of Darfur to escape the conflict.

All of these people are bound by a shared narrative of seeking hope after sorrow. Their stories show that war is not only about death and grief, it is also about resilience, the pursuit of new beginnings, and the second chances that arise in the aftermath of loss.
