Ammar Yassir (B.2005) is a Sudanese documentary photographer whose work centers on displacement, migration, and refugee communities across East Africa. His focus shifted toward Documentary Photography in 2023; he has documented the lives of displaced individuals and refugees working to rebuild in exile. Primarily self-taught, Yassir has expanded his practice through workshops and seminars with Sudan Visuals, VII Academy, Africa Foto Fair, Through The Lens Collective, and National Geographic. His photography has been featured in DIE ZEIT, The New Humanitarian, and Amnesty Journal. His work has helped bring attention and support to refugee communities and has earned recognition, including selection as a FOAM Talent 2026, second place in the 2025 Giga Photo Festival single image category, and a commendation from the Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant in 2024. Motivated by a deep sense of responsibility, Yassir believes African stories should be told by those with a lived connection to the communities they represent.
