In April, I had the oportuntiy to visit The Harvard Crimson for their 2025 Journalism Summit. These were some of the most educational days of my life. Not only did I have the opporutntiy to sit in on live pannels, I got to attend workshops, have others read my work as well as going into Harvard Square to report on timely issues with a deadline of three hours. I can't wait to go back this year.
These are the three journalists I spent most of my weekend at Harvard with. We won 1st place for The News Simulation, using collaboration skills and investigative journalism to support us along the way. To this day, we still check in and share fun stories about our publications and the stories we are working on.
Latoyia Edwards and Raul Marteniez, the newcast team of NBC 10 News at 5 and 6, took time out of their shift to speak with me about what it means to be a journalist. They spoke about what their early years looked like in high school and college. A lot of our conversation stays in the back of my mind anytime I get upset, annoyed, or feel overruled, and as they said, if you attack it today, it can't get to you tomorrow.
Latoyia Edwards spoke to me a lot about finding the perfect college and community when I was first trying to find where I wanted to further my education. She spoke about how proximity is important to college and the future. After she studied at Emerson College (oh hey, I got in!), she spoke on how you need to be able to access the big stories.
During my time spent with Felger and Mazz 98.5, The Sports Hub. I had the opportuntity to sit behind the panels and watch how everything was controlled. This was an amazing opportunitiy because I never would have thought that I would have any interest in a sports coverage show. But at the end of the day, it's all journalism.
Trenni covers sports by herself, sometimes inviting others to pitch opinions about upcoming games. She gave me the rundown of how it took time to find her favorite aspect of journalism, which is sports, and how every step along the way still impacts her career today. Sports is not my strongest section to cover, but Trenni talked to me about the importance of understanding how to broadcast/write for sports. The time spent in her studio was very educational and helped me see the other side of journalism that I normally don't lean toward.
Throughout high school, I also had the opportunity to visit a handful of conferences, including Boston University and Keene State College. These are very different than attending National Conferences. But it was nice to experience some proximity to how adults in nearby towns and states cover stories just like I do.
