Annual Competency

Artifact II: Develop an annual competency course on rehab training with advanced cardiac patients

This is one of three training modules that will be part of the comprehensive training program utilized annually by therapists wanting to work with advanced surgical cardiac patients. This specific module is focused on working with patients while supported by ECMO, and additional modules include general advanced cardiac information and ventricular devices. Included with these modules, therapists will be requires to log a minimum number of hours shadowing with a senior therapist of their specific discipline, and to pass a clinical check off while running a therapy session. The importance of emotional and psychological well-being and support is a critical piece of the training of therapists preparing to work with this patient population. This specific piece is present in the in-person hours working directly with a senior therapist and with the patients. Without this piece of the training puzzle the patients care and progress would be incomplete. While this program is still in development, my long term goal once rolled out is to keep this program running, and advancing with medicine.

Appropriate training is critical in working with advanced cardiac surgical patients. Knowing not only specific protocols, but also best practice supported by evidence-based research provides a solid foundation for therapy. Through the development of a training competency the care provided to this patient population can be consistent and safe, all while maintaining the integrity of the occupational therapy profession.
