ABOUT THE PROTEST

TWO WEEKS AFTER THE MURDER OF GEORGE FLOYD in May 2020, a concerned group of Kean students and alumni created a PUBLIC PROTEST IN JERSEY CITY, Newark Ave.

The organizers of the protest collectively call themselves Just Some Bums and Mary Clare, including performances and artworks by: MARCUS BECKETT, BRANDON BRAVO, TINO COOK, DANTE, ALFONSO GONZALEZ, MARIELENA GUTHRIE, MARY CLARE KING, DESTINY RODRIGUEZ, JASMINE RAMIREZ, BRIANNA SCOTTI, KASIA SIERANT, CHEYONNE THOMPSON, TYSHAUN WILLIAMS, JENNIFER ZUNIGA. Gathering a crowd of passersby, the artists performed, displayed, and passionately discussed their artworks.

In the months following, this protest came to Kean University campus, “ART AS PROTEST” IN THE ART, RACE, AND PROTEST HISTORYTALKS COMMUNITY FORUM in July sponsored by the History Department, now available on YouTube. This movement developed beyond Kean into “HOW STUDENTS CAN PROTEST RACISM” IN THE YOUTH RALLY TO ACTION OF THE CGV SOCIAL JUSTICE GROUP in August, with press coverage in TAP into Verona/Cedar Grove and My Verona NJ Local News.

This exhibition continues the passion and commitment of these students and alumni of Kean to address deep injustices with their artistic voices.
