Bamboo has been a trusted building material for centuries, and now we're working to get it officially recognized in modern construction codes too.
Section 209: Exemption
As currently defined in the Philippine Building Code, public buildings and traditional indigenous family dwellings--intended for private use, built with native materials like bamboo, nipa, logs, or lumber--are exempt from building permit fees.
Standardization is on the way
A technical working group made up of architects, engineers, and government agencies is working to create national standards for structural bamboo, helping it gain formal recognition as a reliable, safe building material.
These are bamboo poles that have been carefully selected, treated, and tested to meet international standards for strength and safety—strong enough to support roofs, walls, and entire buildings.
Our facility is one of the few in the world actively putting these standards into practice, making sure every pole we produce is ready for structural use.
Bamboo poles intended for construction are carefully selected based on their maturity and straightness, then treated to ensure long-term durability.
Maturity – Only poles aged 3 to 5 years are harvested to ensure optimal strength and structural performance.
Straightness – Poles must be straight and free from major deformities to meet building standards.
Preservation – Each pole undergoes chemical treatment to protect against insects, fungi, and mold, extending its lifespan and reliability in structural use.
Our construction grade bamboo poles are tested according to international standards to ensure they meet the requirements for load-bearing use in structural applications.
Moisture Content – Controlled to prevent shrinkage, warping, and degradation.
Structural Strength – Tested for bending, compression, tension, and shear capacity.
The AITECH-accredited cement bamboo frame technology meets key requirements for housing development:
Approved for mass housing projects.
Proven structural safety
The technology has been tested for:
Typhoon resistance
Earthquake resilience
Fire safety
Insect protection
Using locally sourced bamboo makes the system more cost-effective than traditional methods.
Construction grade bamboo poles are processed and tested according to the following international standards to ensure they meet the requirements for load-bearing use in structural applications.
PNS ISO 19624: Guidelines for Grading Bamboo
Defined by ISO 19624:2018, grading is the process of sorting bamboo based on specific criteria to ensure structural integrity and consistent performance. This international standard, adopted in the Philippines in 2020, provides a framework for developing grading procedures tailored to different bamboo species.
PNS ISO 22157 – Bamboo Structural Testing
In 2020, Philippines adopted PNS ISO 22157:2020, titled "Bamboo Structures – Determination of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Bamboo Culms – Test Methods." This standard specifies test procedures for evaluating the physical and mechanical properties of round bamboo culms, including assessments of moisture content, density, and various strength properties such as compression, tension, and bending.
PNS ISO 22156 – Structural Use of Bamboo
"Bamboo Structures — Bamboo Culms — Structural Design," is adopted as a Philippine National Standard (PNS). This standard specifies the design methodologies, applications, and durability of bamboo structures.
Bamboo Grading Criteria
Classification and Grading
Bamboo culms are graded based on key performance indicators such as strength, stiffness, and durability. The grading process includes:
Visual inspection for surface quality and defects
Mechanical testing to assess structural strength
Dimensional consistency to ensure uniform size and shape
Defects and Quality Control
To ensure high-quality bamboo, culms must meet the following standards:
Free from major defects such as deep cracks, large knots, fungal decay, and insect damage
Straightness of the culm is required for structural applications
Age of harvest must be between 3 to 5 years to ensure proper maturity and strength
Structural integrity must be intact, with no visible signs of internal weakness
Moisture Content and Preservation Treatment
Bamboo must have a controlled moisture content to avoid warping, shrinkage, or expansion during use
Preservative treatments are required to improve resistance to pests, fungi, and decay
Structural Performance Testing
Bamboo intended for construction must pass the following strength tests:
Bending strength
Compressive strength
Tensile strength
Shear strength
By aligning with these standards, we help pave the way for bamboo to become a mainstream, code-compliant material for sustainable building in the Philippines.
Cement Bamboo Frame Technology (CBFT) is tested for structural safety and approved for mass housing projects.
The Cement Bamboo Frame system is accredited by AITECH, a program under the National Housing Authority (NHA) that reviews and approves new building technologies.
This accreditation means the system has met strict safety and performance standards—and it’s recognized for use in housing projects, including those funded by the government.
Here are a few of our recent projects that demonstrate what’s possible when bamboo is transformed into lasting, beautiful structures.
Located at The Henry Hotel in Dumaguete, this stunning events hall is built with over 3,000 bamboo poles harvested from nearby communities. It's not just beautiful—it's also the tallest bamboo structure in the Philippines.
Blending modern design with a mix of conventional materials and bamboo, this standout destination offers a contemporary yet natural dining experience—making it a true landmark in Dauin’s culinary scene.
Designed and built by a project team from the Foundation University architecture program—this 2-story bamboo building stands proudly on Danjugan Island, Negros Occidental as a model of sustainable design.
