History of Meet

On May 24, 1919, Aurora East, West Aurora, Batavia, Dundee and Geneva gathered in Aurora at Driving Park for the 1st Kane County Track and Field meet.  Elgin declined to participate after the principal from Elgin was snubbed at a meeting in April.

Encouraging athletes to run track has been an ongoing process forever! Check out what Coach Davis did at Aurora East in 1914.

We should be thankful for the progress we have made in technology.  Reading through the articles of the meets, there were numerous cases of discrepancies.  One example happened in 1924 in the 100 yard dash.  Tom Morley of Elgin was timed for 1st place by the timers.  The pickers choose his teammate Edward Bryant for first and by the time all of the pickers were done with their choices, Tom was left out.  He did, however, come back and win the 220 yard dash later in the meet.

In 1928, Donald Messenger of Aurora East was warming up for the 440 yard run.  An errant javelin hit him in the calf.  After a bandage wrap was applied, Don ran the race and finished 3rd.

The first night meet was held on May 9, 1947 at Batavia's Memorial Field.  A quote from the newspaper said "No records were seriously threatened except the attendance mark.  With 2500 spectators in the stands on a perfect football night, the popularity of night meets is proven - even though it is hard on the boys competing"

Mooseheart was not allowed to participate in 1923, because they weren't a public school.  They refused to enter again until 1942!

In 1950, Dean Moecher from Aurora East flung the discus 25 feet farther than anyone in Kane County had every thrown. He also eclipsed any Illinois record by 7 feet. Unfortunately it didn't count. The wind was deemed to have aided in his attempt.
