Kaleidoscope is new, but the experience and relationships behind it have been built over many years. During my years in special education, I had the privilege of teaching some students for several years and getting to know their families along the way.
These words were shared by parents of former students whose children I had the opportunity to teach and support over multiple years. I am incredibly grateful to the families who have trusted me with their children, shared their journeys with me, and allowed me to share their words here.
“Mrs. Hemperly worked with my 14-year-old, nonverbal autistic daughter for almost four years while being her teacher at Drachman K–8 School. It has been amazing to see the way Yanise now communicates with me and our family, from literally zero words to now being able to tell me key words to help me understand what she needs or wants.
Since she has been in Mrs. Hemperly’s hands, my daughter has grown into a young, independent lady, which I am very thankful for because she now knows basic life skills that I would have never imagined she would be able to do herself without my help.
We appreciate Mrs. Hemperly and all the staff who worked with Yanise through all these years of hard work and dedication.”

"Andrea is very nice. My son was with her at Drachman Middle School, and he improved a lot. She is very supportive every time I need help. I wish my son could stay with her at high school, too. She is also very careful to keep everybody safe. She still supports me with my daughter sometimes if I need help. Thank you, Andrea.”

“Mrs. Hemperley was my son’s teacher for four years. From day one, it was always very clear to me that she absolutely loves these special children and loves seeing them learn, grow, and be a part of the community.
We could not have asked for a more caring and compassionate person. She has never hesitated to offer help and support, even after moving on to new adventures, and she will always have a special place in our hearts and a lifetime of friendship.”

“My family would like to thank you so much! Joseph said he loves and appreciates you for always fighting for him and being there and helping him.
I would like to say we definitely noticed a huge change in him after meeting you. You changed our family's lives and gave so much wisdom!
Thank you for helping Joseph slowly but surely learning how to at least either use his words or ask for you and come to you to get help to calm down when he was upset.
Thank you for being on his side and in his corner, for telling him when he was wrong but doing it in love and with tender care!
Joseph needed to know that aside from family and church family, he has people on his side and that were advocating for him and his needs at the school, and that's exactly what he gained with you!
Words cannot express how grateful we are that we met you and your team. Thank you! 💝🙏🥰”

Some of the most meaningful parts of Kaleidoscope are the relationships that grow through learning, working, creating, and simply spending time together. If your path has crossed with Kaleidoscope, Andrea, or Bobby, we would love to hear about your experience.
Whether you have known us through Kaleidoscope or through our work as educators, colleagues, mentors, community partners, or in another capacity, you are welcome to share whatever feels meaningful to you.
Your words help us reflect on the work we are doing, and they may also help another individual or family get to know the people and community behind Kaleidoscope a little better.
