Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (Bigs) and children (Littles), ages 6 through 18, in Kalamazoo, Allegan, Calhoun, and Van Buren counties. The financial support of hundreds of donors makes it possible for the agency to professionally match and professionally support Bigs, Littles and their families through the life of the match. This leads to positive friendships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

The Ark Shelter

The Ark provides a variety of services to runaway, throwaway, and homeless youth in crisis as well as their families. Services are provided at the shelter, in the home, and in communities across southwest Michigan and are tailored to meet the needs of each youth and family. Bridges Mental Health Counseling

You don't have to suffer alone. Help is available. Professional counseling can help you or a loved one develop the coping skills you need to be a healthier, more productive person and member of society. We offer counseling for individuals of all ages, couples and families.

Caring Network serves over 300 pregnant teens and women and their families each year. Caring Network clients have access to personalized case management, referrals, material support, parenting and pregnancy education classes, and limited transitional housing. All services are FREE and provided at our site (1441 South Westnedge) or in the home/community.

Home Heating Assistance Available Through Catholic Charities

The DHAP provides emergency heating assistance -- up to $300 per household -- to anyone in need residing within the nine counties of the Diocese of Kalamazoo (Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St Joseph, and Van Buren counties). The program helps households defray heating expenses and obtain heating resources (fuel oil, natural gas, electricity, firewood, etc).

Children's Protective Services (CPS)

(note, MDHHS which oversees the CPS department can provide resources to youth and adults who may have an open investigation, or an investigation that has been found unsubstantiated and needing additional community referrals and resources to support areas such as social-emotional health (Family Preservation Program)

The Family Preservation Program provides support programs to families involved with Children's Protective Services. They operate on an annual budget of approximately $56 million, most of which is for contracted services, training and collaborative initiatives. They offer the following services:

Communities in Schools is an organization that partners with local schools to provide students basic needs such as food, clothing, and school supplies. They also seek to address needs such as:

Trained staff and volunteers answer the 211/HELP-Line which provides 24-hour crisis intervention as well as information and referrals to community resources. Individuals can reach this number by dialing 2-1-1 (Kalamazoo County Residents) or 269-381-HELP. Other programs include: community traumatic incident response teams (269-381-HELP), suicide prevention services (269-381-1510 or 800-273-TALK), dispute resolution services (269-522-3434 or 800-873-7658) and a support group for survivors of suicide (269-381-HELP). The Mobile Crisis Response (MCR) Program is a comprehensive, community-based service offering immediate response, 24-hours per day, seven days per week, for youth in Kalamazoo County facing a mental health and/or substance use crisis. Mobile Crisis Response is a team of clinical professionals trained specifically to work with youth and their families. They are skilled in crisis intervention, clinical assessment addressing serious mental health issues, developing crisis safety plans to address risks and behaviors associated with mental health and substance use issues and coordinating short-term crisis placements for youth. The MCR team has up-to-date access to community resources and knowledge of critical youth issues. Mobile Crisis Response provides to families (at no cost):

  • A prompt response from caring professionals who will assess and respond to your crisis situation

  • A focus on individual choice, allowing families to determine the nature of the crisis, and when, where and how MCR will respond

  • Follow up services after a crisis to work with youth, families or providers and to assist in the development of safety/crisis plans
