This project pushed me to reflect upon my own social media tendancies. Then reaching a broader spectrum later after reviewing the Pew Research Center's statistics. I then made my own conclusions about what I think about social media is doing to the population today.
After taking a quiz on my own use of social media, this survery determined that I was fairly reliant on social media. I believe that this quiz is accurate. I do sometimes think that I spend too much time online. I think I could especially benefit from staying off of Tiktok and Instagram becuase those are the apps that are very addicting for me.
The Pew research center has collected data on several topics regarding social media use. The most interesting to me was the age divide between the different social media platforms. I chose this statistic because I have always realized it in my personal life. My grandmother and mother love browsing Facebook while I prefer Instagram and seeing it on a large scale was very interesting to me.
I think that social media has both benefits and downfalls to society. Social media on the positive side can bring people together who otherwise would not be able to connect. Sharing content can spur ideas and creativity. But negatively social media allows for envy and jealousy from idealizing a "perfect life". Also, people can recieve criticism from any person, no matter how much experience or credibility they have which can effect people's self-esteem. I do think that social media can consume people's lives, especially my generation and younger. Something that I think should be more concerning to parents is how the nature of technology is very captivating with instant gradification which I feel like could contribute to the short attention spans seen with children today.
During this lesson I learned more about myself and my personal reliance on technology. I feel like my technology usage makes my procrastination tendancies worse. I am constantly saying I'll be done soon but I will continue to keep scrolling anyway. I also can take the information I learned about the age gaps between social media platforms and ensure that if I am trying to reach a certain demographic on social media to use the correct platform that the demographic prefers.
