For me, teaching goes beyond academic performance and encompasses the holistic development of a student's physical, mental health and overall wellbeing. The aim of education and schooling is to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that caters to the individual needs of all students and where students are given opportunities to develop their cognitive, personal and social development (Beckmann & Cooper, 2004). Students can acquire knowledge and skills that enable them to reach their full potential and become successful community members.
Among the various educational theories, I find the constructivist approach to be highly effective in the classroom. I believe that students actively construct their knowledge by building upon their prior experiences and engaging with the world around them. Learning is an active and meaningful process, where students develop a deeper understanding through problem-solving activities, discussions, and collaborative group work . By encouraging students to question, explore, and connect mathematical concepts to real-world situations, I aim to create an environment where they can actively construct their mathematical knowledge (Zain S. et al., 2012).
In my teaching practice, I prioritise hands-on and interactive learning experiences. Rather than simply presenting information, I strive to facilitate learning that allows students to discover and make connections between mathematical ideas. I value cooperative learning, as it encourages students to appreciate and embrace diversity, fostering a safe and inclusive space for everyone (Churchill, R. et al., 2015).
Technology plays a significant role in modern education. Therefore, ensuring the safety and responsible use of technology is crucial in my teaching practices. I am committed to equipping students with knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world securely (National Cybersecurity Alliance, 2022). Educators can incorporate these discussions into curriculum covering topics such as online privacy, cyberbullying, and managing online relationships (Student Wellbeing Hub, 2020). Collaborating with parents to raise awareness about online safety issues and provide them with resources to support their children is also important in promoting eSafety that extends beyond the classroom (Student Wellbeing Hub, 2020). Besides these strategies, I also should stay up to date with the latest trends and advancements in education, including developments in AI which will allow me as a teacher to stay abreast of changes in education in order to prioritise students' safety and well-being as well as support students engagement and monitor their online classroom activities.
Overall, my teaching philosophy centres on creating a dynamic and inclusive learning environment where students actively construct their knowledge, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and appreciate the value of education beyond academics.
