This sequence lesson plan is my final artefact which aims to expand year 10 students' understanding in solving quadratic equations using a range of strategies. Throughout the three lessons, students are enabled to decide which strategies should be utilised for each problem. Reflecting on my sequence of lesson plans on Solving quadratic equations for Year 10 students, I can identify areas where I can further enhance student learning and incorporate strategies within the Professional Practice domain, specifically focusing on assessment and ICT integration.
To monitor student progress and provide timely feedback during the lessons, I will employ formative assessment strategies like exit tickets and short quizzes. This ongoing feedback will help improve the effectiveness of their learning experience (Wang, 2007). Additionally, at the end of the sequence, I will design a summative assessment that includes problem-solving tasks and real-world applications to assess students' overall understanding of solving quadratic equations.
Furthermore, to enhance students' engagement and reinforce their learning, I will leverage interactive online resources and platforms. These tools, such as Desmos, Geogebra, Symbolab, and Kahoot, will enable students to visualise quadratic equations, access step-by-step solutions, and receive immediate feedback, fostering independent learning and promoting active participation. Ensuring eSafety practices, I will have an explicit discussion with students about online interactions to ensure a respectful and secure learning environment.
By reflecting on and implementing these strategies, I can create a more engaging, and effective learning experience for my Year 10 students as they work through the topic of solving quadratic equations. Thereby, it will align with standard 4 and 5 of APST- "Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environment" and "Assess, provide feedback, and report on student learning" (AITSL, 2018). The use of appropriate assessment practices and thoughtful integration of ICT will support their learning and enhance their mathematical understanding.
