Having grown up in South Florida, some of the most iconic figures in the world of sports to me have always been Coach Erik Spoelstra and Jimmy Butler, reigning MVP of the East Coast Finals.
While reporting at the Miami Heat v. New Orleans Pelicans game, the intensity reached a point of chaos, breaking out in a fight. As an objective reporter, I sought to understand both sides of the tension between the teams.
Butler is a player known to react well throughout the game when provoked. When discussing the altercation and the potential of tension in future games, Butler's answers to my questions made headlines. Being aired on ESPN, SportsCenter, BallySports, and trending across Twitter was a very notable moment in my career. The clip has amassed millions of views across many platforms.
In the clip, Butler sparks rivalry between the two teams by declaring the Heat 'the better team'. In the next game set in Miami, the Pelicans came out on top. My conversation was the main topic in sports again—as the teams began trolling each other online, quoting the video. The video had been publicly commented on by Butler, Pelicans Coach Willie Green, and posted by Naji Marshall after this game.
Over the Summer, when working at Where Y'At, I found it peculiar that we reported on our city's NFL team, yet not our NBA team. I then decided I'd try to get the ball rolling on NBA content for our site and magazine. I started by writing about New Orleans' newest draft pick, before connecting with the Pels' PR and Communications Manager. We then discussed a plan for my coverage of the team for the season, beginning with a 'Season Preview' for media day. These pieces are embedded below.
Over the course of the season, I have had an excellent experience with this team thus far. I have become so engaged, dedicated, and excited regarding my work. As a college senior, I now run a successful sports column. Responsibilities of working with the Pelicans PR team include staying up to date with press releases, league news, press conferences, and finding creative ways to showcase the organization. I have connected to each member of the team and staff, as well as the fan base in order to bring forth the best possible stories and social media content. These stories combine my talents of reporting and storytelling, and will continue to throughout the season. Below are some samples from the season thus far.
