Kia ora, I am Shanandore.
My whakapapa and family are very important to me and in understanding who I am and where I have come from. I am essentially a lifelong learner at heart.
In November 2019 I've resigned from my role as a Specialist Teacher at Papakura Intermediate (PI) in order to take postgraduate studies in the Master of Technological Futures with Mindlab. I will resume a Specialist role again with PI in 2020 but with more specialty - I received a Teachers Study Award for the year and this means I can work on a real life project that students can lead. This project will have an environmental sustainability focus and align with the United Nations Sustainability Goals.
In 2020-2021 I hope to serve my community in multiple ways by helping students of our community, Papakura, to see themselves as connected activist who truly understand their role as kaitiaki. They will help to restore Te Wairoa river - restoring up to 1km of river. They will help to create and design an education program based on the restoration. They will lead the surveying of the plants, birds, water and macro-invertebrates in order to monitor the restoration journey. They will lead the maintenance and presentation of this data that members of their community could use.
I love the stars, our environment and matauranga maori. All these will be intertwined into the project.
Nō reira, i hono au ki Te Wharekura o Mauao hei kaiako pūtaiao, auaha me ētahi o ngā whatumanawa.
Teaching is about people and kindness which comes before assessments.
“I’ve come to a frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or dehumanized.” ― Haim Ginott
I do place a high value on: student agency (heutagogy), ubiquitous learning and blended learning. I have a passion for blending science and Matauranga Maori. The difficulties with this has been putting in enough structure that allows student freedom but not soo much that it dictates outcomes, stiffling creativity and not sooo little that chaos is present.
Papakura Intermediate School's vision and mission was very important to my own beliefs:
We are home to innovative learners and leaders.
To develop leaders who will self-determine their future
What interests me in Te Wharekura o Maniapoto is firstly it's home for me. The kura, the staff and the students will be whanau. The second thing that attracted me was the ability to work inside what the kura calls 'whatumanawa' or 'hubs' - very similar to 'passions learning'. Students choose, and dictate their own learning.
