Te Wharekura o Mauao is a special character school (Tau 7 – 13), under section 156 of The Education Act 1989. The primary language spoken at Te Wharekura o Mauao is Te Reo Māori. The Wharekura caters for the needs of those who wish to be educated in Te Reo Māori, and in a Māori environment.
Te Wharekura o Mauao is affiliated to Ngā Kura-ā-Iwi Aotearoa Incorporated, an established professional educational network for Māori medium kura. This gives the Wharekura the ability to take ownership of key strategic aims and objectives with educational focus, aligned with the aspirations of ngā iwi o Tauranga Moana. The essence of Tauranga Moana identity is its diversity of iwi. This is as strong today as it has been historically. The Wharekura community continues to faithfully support all hui-ā-iwi and provide unity, cohesion and vision.
The people are proud of their identity as Tauranga Moana, and support their marae and hapū. We draw upon and incorporate the aspirations and plans expressed in the Ngāi Te Rangi Mahere Rautaki and the Tauranga Moana Reo Māori strategy. We will soon look to similar documents created by Ngāti Pūkenga and Ngāti Ranginui to guide and support the curriculum of the Wharekura.

Our kura, who we are and what we are doing is important in the bigger scheme of things. Our kura is 250 students with families in Te Reo Māori (compare a local school Year 9 has 250). For some families this is the first time they have put their students in Te Reo Māori. Heywood says that it takes 3 generations of Te Reo Māori kia pupuri te reo Māori ki tō whānau. Lost through one generation and it is lost.
As a kaiako - we have a job to do too. Our current issues - we are under staffed by 3 kaiako, limited relievers, sickness in our community, tauira motivation declining, Te Reo Māori value in our kura.
Under staffed - kaiawhina e ngākaunui ana ki te kaupapa - seeking Lats, internal relief-compensation, rostered day home, support for Te Reo Māori.
Investing in whānau, rostered day off - teachers have time to come up to speed, rangatahi passions/our passions - be whakahīhī - be their role models (be the leader/challenge them).
Straight talking - at school - curriculum is covered. We are not breaching collectives and under allocating - it's a good ride. We are better at forecasting for relief. Managing masks will continue to work for us as we manage this with integrity.
Expectations in Te Reo Māori rising - How do you improve your Te Reo Māori - it's not the 1hour course you do in a class - it's the other 23hrs you do during your life - eg read reo, prakitihi reo, reo ki ro whānau.
Kaiako value the School values.
Teachers have 1min behind laptops - students not happy with this.
Students do not come being fully independant - have strategies to teach foundational skills.
Kaiako value each other - be on time & carry each other - be present.
Kaiako inspire tauira - what can I do for you to enjoy this class.
Diversity in teaching and learning - diversify, find better ways.
Be prepared & have integrity. Accountability is coming.
