My original thoughts were to complete this Master of Technological Futures while working on a Phase Two for our Matauranga Maori Astronomical Playground which would have included adding onto the playground and the design of a digital platform that would utilise the playground in learning eg star nav, planet learning, solstices understanding - while possibly incorporating augmented reality technologies. The project proposal is centred around kaitiakitanga and gaurdianship of our environment. Papakura Intermediate is a school specifically for Year 7-8's located in South Auckland. As one of the school's values is centred around 'kaitiakitanga' it was fitting that this project centre around 'making our mark in the world but not leaving a mark'. How can we be empowered to take action?
Te Wairoa River is located in South Auckland. It is Auckland's second largest river and the two damns that contribute to this river feeds 60% of Auckland's water supply. Basically, if this river is not running, you are not drinking. Te Wairoa River is predominantly surrounded by farms and the vegetation has been denuded over time. The water flow of the river has two extremes from flooding to very low water levels. The two extremes exist for this river. Community groups such as Friends of Te Wairoa have started taking restoration action

From Papakura Intermediate's Strategic Plan 2017-2019:
"Papakura Intermediate specialises in teaching and transitioning
youth through the most pivotal growth period of their lives. Like
our students who drive the future of our ancestors, families and
societies, the leaf of the adolescent kahikatea is pivotal in drawing
in the sun’s energy, converting it and effectively feeding and giving
life to the whole tree. The juvenile kahikatea leaf top-centre of the
logo, is safe-havened between home & school and past & future, as
it stands tall to forge upwards and outwards into the world.
The symbolism of 3 weaving into 1
This gives meaning to:
• Our school vision - Tū Rangatira, believe, strive, achieve
• Our school values - to take pride in ourselves (rangatiratanga),
our relationships with others (whanaungatanga) and our
environment (kaitiakitanga)
• Our people – family at home, whanau at school and self
• Our time – past, present and future"
The Painga Project is founded by Sarah Corson. The following is taken from the Painga Project website:
"Painga simply means ‘well-being’ and the Painga Project is focused on the well-being of primary and intermediate students in low decile South Auckland schools. The Painga Project works to enable a variety of life and learning opportunities through tailored art, music, social, health and sporting programmes within schools. Through these programmes students gain confidence and build pathways into secondary school and beyond."
