Issues with Sonny's case and trial according to attorneys and investigators

Information about the issues in Sonny's case and trial

P. 1-6 (excerpts of Sonny’s jury trial)

o Judge Makino had some concerns with the jury instructions on Sonny’s juvenile conviction.

o Pohlson didn’t care and said he would object to whatever Lloyd said. This contradicts with Deanna Lamb’s letter, stating that he did not object to Li Da Liang’s testimony.

P. 7-15 (Deanna Lamb’s letters and requests from appellate court)

o February 11, 2003 letter: inquires to Pohlson regarding plea bargain objection of Liang’s testimony and other trial issues.

o Deanna Lamb made a series of requests to the 4th appellate district.

o June 19, 2003 letter: inquires to Debra Lloyd regarding the DNA evidence on a blue and white striped shirt.

o October 17, 2003 letter: inquires to Pohlson regarding the possibility of exculpatory evidence for the DNA of the blue and white striped shirt.

o November 4, 2003 letter: Pohlson’s reply to Lamb’s inquiries, stating that there was no DNA evidence on the shirt.

P. 16-23 (colored and black and white photos of the shirt and the victim’s burned vehicle)

o P. 21: clear photo of a partially burned “Van Heusen” shirt.

§ How was it possible for the law enforcement to clearly identify the brand of the shirt, when the upholstery of the vehicle was burned? Only the metal frame of the vehicle remained. This caused one of the jurors to have some doubts on the evidence, in addition to the fact that there was no DNA evidence on the shirt that was supposedly worn when the “stabbing” took place. The other photos showed that the shirt was burned so much that it was difficult to make out the brand.

P. 24 (Juror 1’s concern on the photos of the shirt)

P. 25-26 (Mo’s interview)

o Mo told Invs. Montgomery and Jacobson that the shirt worn was a “long-sleeved like Polo kind of shirt. It was a light-colored shirt. I’m not sure. And just some pants,” (Mo’s 6th interview p. 21).

P. 27-29 (Inv. Tracy Jacobson’s notes and Mo’s 1/25/00 interview about Adat (Li Da Liang))

o The person who wore the long-sleeved blue and white shirt with jeans was Adat (aka Li Da Liang). Additionally, the brand was a “Polo” dress shirt, not a Van Huesen shirt. Adat relayed this information to Gary Cain, another detective in this case. This information was never revealed in discovery and was concealed by the law enforcement.

o Mo even confirmed that Adat and the rest of the perpetrators wore long-sleeve shirts with jeans on the day in question, 1/24/00. Mo provided this information a day after the murder of Yi Chen (Eric) Liu.
